es CROSBY 8. NOYES.,....,...Editers WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY...........00-APRIL 29, 1969, S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. SER OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ‘Tae Sew Lise. Sctt.—Mr. John Russell Young has a letter in the New York Erening Post of yesterday, in relation to the recent pub- ications in the New York Sun in regard to Dim. He says that the publication is part of effort made to drive him from the Tribune and the press of New York city: and that be had are Bis; but says they have been “so dexter ously arranged, and clipped, and eliminated, ‘and commented upon,” that matters which ‘were uever in bis mind, and circumstances ‘which never existed. are made to appear as his Ife, and speech, and thoughts. The Phiiadetpbia Post asserts that the Asso- ciated Press dispatches alleced to have been furnished to that paper in an un‘erband way by Mr. Young were really supplied by Amos J. Cummings, then night editor of the Tritune, ‘who was sfterwards dismissed by Mr. Young for disobedience, and who with McClntock, cischarged from the cashiership of the Post, Low seeks this mode of revenge. For some reason the New York papers, with the exception of the /’ost, have thus far not one ‘word editoriaily to say in regard to this re- ™markable expose. ‘Tse Guostty ProruRes.—The New York Courts have been occupied for some days with the grave investigation of the question whether ‘there is such a thing as spiritual photography —. in other words, whether disembodied spirits ‘ean be summoned from the spheres to sit for ‘their likenesses im cheap “doggerytypes.” A photographer, named Mumier. produces pic- tures with shadowy figures in the back-ground, ‘which he claims are pictures of deceased imends of the sitters. The evidence of the photographers, however, shows that these shadows are transferred to the camera from other plates without any supernatural agency. But the most conclusive testimony against the Spirit-photograph humbug was that furnished by the veteran showman Phineas T. Barnum. He stated that Mumler started this game in Boston, and sfter it was played out there sold btm some of the pictures, ayowedly as “spir- itual bumbugs,” to furnish a chapter in his (Barnum’s) book upon the humbugs of the world. ‘We note with real satisfact‘on the fact that & young man was accidentally killed in mond the other day by the di:charge in his own band efa pistol which he had been. playfaily, pouting atsome of bis companions 8 moment before. Not that we have any malice toward the young man in question individually, nor inst we do not sympathize with his sorrowimg Telatives. But we object to the class of which he was a representative: aud we think the ‘World would be better off with the whole lot outofit. So long as only other peoplr at~whom these idiotic criminals sportively pointed their Josded firearms tell dead oy their accidental discharge there was little prospect that the Practice would be abated; but if it happens oc. casionally that one of those who indulge in such dangerous pastimes falls a victim to his own folly, we shall live in hope. As the impression seems to have got abroad that ail registered voters are liable to be chosen 3s jurors in the several courts of this Instrict, ‘we will state that the Iaw of Congress provides that the list of such jurors shall be made of «male citizens, tax payers.” Thelaw formerly read “white male citizens. tax payers,” but the Word “white” was stricken out by Congress, As we have stated heretofore, there will be Ro new list made out until the first of F next. when the officials designated in the Act ‘Will make them out, exercising their discretion as to whether the names of any colored tax | payers sball be placed thereon as well as white tax payers. Nor ror Joz.—W. D. Wallach, Esq,, inde- pendent Republican candidate for Congress trem the Seventh District of Virginia, having Jately addressed a letter to B. H. hap mapa asking bis suppert in the coming contest, ceived rather a tart reply from Mr S, sor says : «I beg toimterm you that,l am a candidate for Congress myself, ‘as the regular nominee of the Conservative party of this district. a tact which you seem to Dave been too ‘intensely busy’ to have observed: and that 1 do aot in tend to abandon the field in favor of auy of the | various aspirants for its Donors. ——<—<$<_<_—____ ‘The Commissioners appointed by the State of Pennsyivania to ascertain the amount of damages inflicted by the rebels during the war, upen the people of the border counties ot that State, Bave finally got through with their | jabors, and have made a report. It is ander- ‘stood that the State of Penasyivania does not Propose to assume the payment of these dam- ages, but simply to ascerttin the correct Smount of them, in order to makes demand "pon the Federal Government for paynent at some future time. ie We bave a number of communications upon the coming municipal election, urging the claims of various candida'es for office. We refer our contributors to the business counter, ‘where they can be as eloquent as they please in bebalf of the men of their choice—at the usual advertising rates. ee ee “Uncle Tom's Cabin” will be repeared for the Iast time at the National Theatre this even- 41mg, (0 Sccommodate the large number of citi- zens who wisb to see this effective play betore its withdrawal. “The Octoroon” will be given to-morrow evening for benefit of Mr. George Kunkel. —_—_______.
