Mr. Thurman inquired if any appropriation had been made to defray the expeases of the survey. Mr. Wilson thought the adoption of the reso. He thought probably the Navy Department had m-ans to detray the expen-es of the same. Mr. Pomeroy thought the resolution should be modified to as to request the President to have the survey made. Mr. Anthony, from the Committee 90 Print- ing, reported that the committee had made a sauistactory contract with Rives & Buuley tor the publication of the Congressional debates. Mr. Carpenter called up bis resolution re- questing the Secretaries of State, War, Navy. ‘Treasury, Interior, the Postmaster Genera! and Attorney General to furnish the Senate with the names and ages of all clerks and em- ployees of their offices, compensation received, States from which they ate appointed, how Jong they had resided in sueh S‘ates, aud upon whose Tecommendation they had been ap- pointed. Mr. Williams said this subject Bad been be- fore the Committee on Retrenchment, and he fuggested the resolution be referred to that committee. Mr. Carpenter thonght there were twice as many employees in the Departments as neces. sary to conduct the business. He believed it the force was reduced to halt its present uum ber, and the salaries incron-ed, the public busi- hess would be well conducted. Mr. Sherman was opposed to the resolution, as the Blue Book contained most of the de- sired information. Mr Carpenter stid many clerks were charged to States where they wever had resided. Mr. Trumbull hoped the resolution would be adopted. He condemned the practice of Sena- wors hanging around the Departments seeking oftices for persons. Witbin the past eighteen or twenty years Senatore had become mere soli- citors at the Departments. Mr. Abbott offered an amendment providing that the office patronage should be distributed! equally among all the Svates according to taeir population, Mir. Cameron was in tavor of the resolution.
