Tee {spas Qcestios — StaTs—pince the appointment of the Peace | Commission, some twe yezrs or more ago, the | public have waited with mach anxiety for the | solution of this difficult problem. The tide has been now this way and now that. Prior to the last meeting of the Co; tendency was for war and sharp military dis. ciplne. This feeling was increased by the adjournment of the Board sae die without having accomplished it= object;. Meantime, tne Ropes of the peace mezsure advocate: were kept slive by the orgapization o: a society in | New York in the interest of the Indians, ostea- + sibly to christianize and civilize them. That | society brs held numerous meetines, and issued appeals particularly addressed to the Christian sentiment. Last July, the Execative Boird of | that Soctety prepared a petition, which was | circulated more particularly amons the Qua- kers. At the late general Meeting of that body in Baltimore, a large and influential delegation ‘Was appointed to wait on the President and Congress and arge peace measures. This dele- gation appointed a sub-commutt >, who have had pumerous interviews with the Pre-ident: Secretary of the Interior, Congressional Com- | ‘Mittees, and Congressmen, a!| the while urging peace messures. On Thursday last they ap- peared betore the Senaie Committee, ond when | interrogated as to what they wanted and how they expected to accomplish the work, and how | much of the work they would underiake, they | were wholly at tault. They were willing to take 25,000 of the Indians, (the Sioux,) out of 360,000, and wanted about $3,000,000 for them alone. At this rate, the whole would require $4,000,000 for a starter. This only sbows the | impropriety of men undert:king work they know nothing about. While the mans~ement of the great New York and Pennsylvania railway routes have Deen busy extending their lines ~tward, tbat of the Baltumore and Onio line has not been idle, a8 our columns have trom time to time | borne witness. The latest achievement of the Tatter in the way of absorption 1s t! sing of | the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark road for | ‘8 term of ninety-nine years from the Ist of May | next, after which date it will form and oe rua asa part of the main line. Itisalso negotia- | ting for a route from Monroeville, a point on | its newly acquire line, to Toledo, with a view of forming ai that city connections with the | roads running through Michigan. It at can make sat.sfactory arrangements with the Lake | Sbore Company, the Baltimore asd Ohio man- agement will run trains over the Cleveland and Toledo division, but if it canaot, it is un- dersteod that it is prepared to undert Ke the building of an independent line trom near | Momroevilie to Toledo, so determined is it to | Dave a direct connection with Caicago and the | great Northwest. Mr. Garrett permitted himself, either by su- Pineness or illiberality, to be outstripped by Bis Northern rivals, who some time since ce- cured control of the natural and shortest out- jets of bis line to the West and Northwe't, as & glance at the map will show; but if the mo ‘Ment under notice is consummated it will goa good way toward restoring the equilibrium, and still give him an opportunity to compete with the other trank lines forthe traffic of that Tich ard rapidly improving sectica. From what we bear, we believe the enterprise will be carried forward vigorously and surce-:. tally. ‘The New York #vening Post, not being cen- sational in its character, is not ordinarily in great demand here, but there was a call yes- terday for more copies of its issue of Satarday than could be suppliv4 from the hotel news- stands. The special attraction. es nearly as we | could understand it, was an editorial arucle on Senator Fenton, in which the charges o corruption heretofore made against tat gea- tleman were commented upon at some length, and im a decidedly severe and damaging man- ner. The article closes with the following pointed language “Let General Grant request And ther subordinates to bave words with this person. His position as Senator gives him | RO Tight of access to them or to the antl he clears bis skirts of the sworn accusa- ons against him: and the administration will surely sink very low in the public e-teem and confidence, if it is seen to grant him favors to Sp} Oint his creatures to places of trast, while be rests meekly unuer the accusations of such 3 nature a> we have spoxen of.” There would seem to be, and doubtless is, Some bitter personal animus st the bottom of the /’, «t's attack upon Senator Fenton. In the same issue of the / at is another edi- Sorial article, written, as is stated, several days | 8go0, in which an exrnest protest is made against ‘efoonfirmation of Mr. Merritt es Naval O: cer of the port of New York, on the ground that he is mot a proper person for the place. ‘The appeal comes too late, as the appointmeat was confirmed om Friday last; but the article may nevertheless do good, if the new inc: bent of the p'sce is badly inclired, as it may have the effect of putting him oa his good be- havior. us secretaries EES There are no local matters of more absorbing interest at this time than the railroad move- menthere. The necessity for additional faeil- ities for the transportation of passengers and freight to and from the Dustrict is acknow- ledged by ali classes of our citizens. The most smportantof the enterprises now on foot are | the proposed extension of the Loudon and Hampshire Railroad westward, and the con- nection of that road with the District; aud our connection with the Point Lookout road. The Board of Trade at their special meeting on Sst- urday evening, warmly endorsed these Pro- Jects, and have Congress the Power to the Uorporations of Wasbington and Georgeto to ma‘ce the prb- posed subscriptions to both roads. In view of ibis action, amd of the unasimous expressions of opmion by business men in favor of the pro- posed municipal legisiation, we earnestly hope that the action of our City Councils to-night ‘will be prompt and decided. No time sboald be lost im availing oursives of the opportunity mow presented to crease our raiiroad facili- ties, and thus promote our commercial inter- ests and reduce the costof living here. pester aes ny As rule we have not much confidence in ether the usefulness or final succes: of news- papers devoted to special mterests or organi. zations, but the new conductors of the Depart. ‘ment Jowrnal—a paper published in this city in the interest of Government employees—bid tur to make their undertaking 10 exception to the general rule. Mr. Myers has had considerable amd very creditible experience as both editor and publisher, while bis associate Mr. Morton, bas tren trained in the same school; and as they are both in the civil service, | they ought to be able,os we doubt not they will be, to make a paper at once interesting ‘and valuable to their patrons. If they cinnot. the experiment may as well be avandoned. pase ok de ME ht From J. Shilungton, Odeon Building, we have | the first number of Apple.or.’s Weekly Journal, the advent of which has been looke! for with considerable interest, trom the tact that itis to ccnt@an im addition to other attractive fearares the @dvance chaptere of Victor Hugo's new | novel ~The Man Who Loughs. Qook has given tothe Republican cauce and the advocacy of General Grant an amount of intelligent labor that has earned tor Bim a national name amongst leading mea of the party. He and the others assailed are not ikely to be harmed in any degree by such transparently malicious attacks, but so long as they were reported in the STAR, we have thought it due to these gentlemen to expose the length, breadth and depth of the so-called “ Orginal Grant Mi \d the animasot the twain composing the concern. ’ Me.
