Disappointed office-seekers are howling over ‘what they call the nepotism of President Grant in appointing relatives, or members of his lat= military family to office. Now, we think it rather to the credit of the President that with- out circumiocutiod or affectation be surrounds Dumeelf oMficially with immediate friends, and those whom he know: to be deserving and reliable. Every President is supposed to look after his friends, but by the theory of some this should ve done covertly Snd indirectly, as if it were something to be ashamed of. President Grant, with more man- limess and frankness, epenly appoints those acceptable to him, and who have been true to bim, to position, ard more especially to offices am what may be calied his own official house- Bold. In this course he follows the course of straightforward Andrew Jackson, who never taaled to take care of his friends. As the views of the new Secretary of the ‘Treasury touching certain questions connectec ‘With finance likely to be passed upon by bim have s renewed and increased interest for the public, we may state the fact that ina speech | made mm Congress last July Mr. Boutwell ex- pressed himself opposed to sales of gold: anu atthe Massachusetts Repeblican Convention Iast fall he @eclared himself a hard money msn, or rather as in favor of diminishing the | volume of currency uatil it approximates in yalue to the standard of coin. It will be re- membered that be also proposed a plan for funding the public debt in an amendment to or betitute for the Senate bill submitted by him om the 2istof July last, which provided sub- stantially for thejfunding of $1,200,000,000 of the public debt, $400,000,000 payable in fifteen years At five per cent. interest, £400,000.000 payable in twenty years at four and a-half per cent. in- terest. and $400,000,000 payable in twenty-five years at three and sixty-five hundredths per Cent interest; the latter sum of $400,(01,000 to be payable, principal and interest, at the option of the taker, either in the United States, or at London, Paris, or Frankfort ‘The rumor current in theatrical circles 0; several days past, to the effect that the auda_ cious snd multipotent Fiske would be bere with one of his trusty leutenants to personally over- see the performances of his French Opera Troupe at the Nationa! Theatre this week, does Rot seem to be verified. At least he has not up tothis period put in an appearance. And there- by, as we think. the modern Alexander has made a mistake, not only in a pecuniary but 80 ip a sensational point of view. The simple nnouncement, for instance, that he would cecupy one of the private boxes would of it- | felt draw a crowd; and, to see his pudgy hana | swing the baton,or to take in his pinguid and smartly clad form booming down the stage, and roundly cursing the management the while, 8s he did at Brougham’s the other even- irg, would be ap event to remember for s life time. Even Dans, madly rushing from the Capitol to the Treasury om bis flery untamed velocipede, would not preeenta more attractive spectable. James should come to Washington by ail means, if he can leave his hundred and odd undertakings in and about New York long enough to make the trip. He could surely make it interesting in some way. Ifthe Opera failed to afford his genius suflicient piay, he | might try running Congress or the Cabinet fora | few days. These, we believe, are about the only flelds to which he bas not yet given his versatile attention; and their cultivation might keep him from rusting for a little while. Leeatizixe Comrixations oy WORKING ™EB.—While the bricklsyers’ strike in New York was in progress last year, some of the ‘workingmen who had quit work becaase their employers had more apprentices than the rules of the association to which they belonged al- _ lowed, were arrested, tried, and convicted in the court at Morrisiana of violating the con- spiracy laws of the State of New York. Tney appeaiea tom higher court, bat in the mean- time the questions involved gave rise to com- siderable discussion in the newspapers and elsewhere, and was brought before the Lezis- Istare. On Thursday list tue House of As- sembly passed a bill, the effect of which is stated in the New York Sun to be that “hence- forth combinations ef capitalists and laborers stand upom a common legal piatform.”” The bill was prepsred by the Trades’ Assembly Which convened in Altany in January, and SS passed by the Assembly enacts that it shall be lawful for any and all classes of mechanics, | journeymen, tradesmen, and laborers to form Societies and associations for their mutual aid, benefit, and protection, and peaceably to meet, discuss, aud establish all necessary by-law: rules, and regulations to carry out the same. The provisions of the Kevised Statates shail not apply to the members of any society or Association formed in pursuance of this act. [The section referred to makes it a misdemes- nor for “two or more persons to conspire to commit any act injurious to the public health, to public morals, or fo trade and commerce”) ‘The briet season of (pera Kouge which com- menees at the National Theater this evening, ‘will afford agreat treat for lovers of Offenbach’ music, and acmirers of artistic comic acting and burlesque. Tostee and Irma, the prim: domnas of the company, achieved a Parisian reputation before coming to this country, and the iatter 1s said to rival the great onginal Grand Duchess, Mdlie. Scheneider, in her va- Tious rolrs. Ot Tostee we have already had an experience im this city, both as the Grand Duchess and Helen. Aujac (the great tenor) and Decre are recent additions to the troupe. Snd are highley spoken of, and Lagriffoul, Laduc and Duchesne have Recome familiar here. Birgfeld is managing the troupe, which is of itself @ certificate of its completeness. “La Pericbole,” the opera to be presented to- Bight, is one of Offenbach’s latest works. Al- though the majority of the airs are lively and ‘Yattling, yet there are several gems of <ensitive and pathetic music in it. {rma is La Peri- chole, and Aujse is Piquillo, with other char- acters filled out by Leduc, Edgard and Hamil- tom. The most unbesltby States in the Union, according to the last Census (1-60), were Arkansas, next Louisians, where fevers pre- vail; then Massachusetts, where consa' prevails; while in the States of New Yorg ou the North and Fiorida on the Soath the mor- | talty was about an average of the whole num- | ber of deaths —showing the greatest degree of | health to exist in the North western and Pacific | | States of the Union. ‘The Census of 1860, although very deficient in this particular, gave comparative results of the greatest interest. It appeared that the total ceaths from all diseases was 394,150; of | whom 9.7% per cent. (355%) died of fevers of different type, acd 13.79 per cent. (19,1 1%) died sf consumption. Of the there died in the Eastern or New England States, 4 per cent; im the Middle States, 15 per cent.; in the Western States; 12 per cent; and in the Southern States, about 6 per cent.; while in the fatter section from 12 to 15 per cent. died of fevers. In the Pacific States there were 10 per cent. dying of consumption, and S per cent. of fevere—showing this to be a very healthy region of country. Northern Michigan, Wis- | consin, Minnesota, Dak and Montana are, | however, eqaally healthy, being in a great de- gree tree from consumption and fevers, as well as every cther section of the Rocky Mountain range, extending from the eonfines of Mexico | to the British possession on the North. | J. Coyle and Towers. John C. Breckinridge calls himself an extinct volcano, but for all that we have an idea he hopes to belch to someextent in the U.S. Sevate in the not remote future. If he does not it is certain that some of his friends have such expectations in his behalf. With Andy Johnson, Breckinridge, and others of that ilk in the Senate, the opposition seats will be recruited with a pretty aggressive element, The friends of Henry Ward Beecaer in Brooklyn are making an organized effort to raise the necessary funds to pay for a bronze statue of that gentleman, heroic in size, to be placed on one of the shelves of the proposed Clark Mills monument to Lincoln. 86.00) is the sum required. The combustible gas is burned out by the wick leaving some tree ammonia and chlorine gas in the lamp, and in the pres ence of these every chemist knows that explo- sion or even combustion is impossible. So much for this then. Now please let me call attention to the importance ofammonia as extinguisher of fire from acy cause. I speak from experience, as it saved our gallery from buraingbet last winter, at the Naval Academy. The coal ofl lamp tell down by accident in my dark room and broke. Of course there was a devil of a smell: ammonia, you Know, bas & strong odor.—but the fire was out,and the wooden building saved.
