Tests of Explosive Kerosene. 7 Stor .—We belong to the benighted class who have not gas in their dwelling- honses. For years we have used kerosene ol, and so far we bave met with no accident; it bas afforded us a good light at trifling cost, and we bave been inclined to sing its praises. Tbe frequent announcements in che uewspa- pers of accidents arising from its use we Lave passed by, attributing them to the carelessness of the sufferers, and flattering ourselves that with our habits of caution we are inno dan- ger. Lute events bave rather shaken this cou- fidence, the explosion of a lamp in New York having led to & pretty general testing of the oil in_use there, with the result that the great ma- jority of the specimens so tried were pro- Lounced inflammable and dangerous. Lt is not Pleasant to sit im fear and trembling around the evening lamp, and we hailed with gratutade the publication of a simple means of proving the purity of the oil in the Journal of Chemisiry for December. Dr. Nichols says: “The error ‘must not prevail that kerosene oil of legat standard will ignite or burn ifa Jamp containing it is broken. Good oil, such as ebould be used in families, will extinguish flame when brought in contact with a. Oil hented tothe usnal point when buruing in a lamp im the evening, should extiaguish a lighted match when thrust into it.” (1 beg the reader not to try at experiment first.) «If we reader is using im his family unadult-raied kerosene he may taxe off the cap of the lamp, tbrust in lighted taper, he may turn it out upon the floor and apply the flame, and it will ‘not take fire nor .
