Mrs. and Mics Matthews, the mother and sister of Mr. Colfax, and Mr Matthews bis step-father, assisted in entertaming the guests, many of w& m ling Ted untilalstehour. Mrs. Coltax was attired ina rich white silk dress with fall train, and trim- mings of narrow folds oi white satin, white lace collar, and pearl ornaments in the hair. Among those present were Senator Sherm*n, Congressmen Kellogg, Moriill, Cnurchill: McKee, Williams of Indiana, Stover, Blaine, Driggs, Hill, Maynard, Roots, Washburne of Indiana; Donnelly, Representative elect trom Western Virginia; Governor Harriman, of New Hampshire; Senator Chaffee, of Colorado; As- stant Attorney General Dickey, Aaron M. Among the new features of the residence of the Vice President elect, which he has leased for four years, is a large addition to the space | for receptions, in an enclosed porch, 40 feet long, | ¢ mmmupicating With both parlors, haudsomely | Carpeted and cuartained, with pictures of Li cm, Grant, Coifax, Ritchie's engraving of “Death bea of Lincols,” Nast's engraving of Lincoln's entrance into Richmond, and a bird's eye view ef South Bend, Ind., the city of Mr. C's residence. There is also one of Jones’ busts of President Lincoln. In the parlor is a large life-size portrait of Mr. Colfax, (a copy of the one painted for the Union Leegue at Philadelphia.) presented to Mrs. Matthews, Mr. C's mother, by Republi- cams of that city; and by his side an old picture of bis mother, when & widow of 20, with ‘Schuyler, then 2% years old, by her side. The weekly receptions of Mr. and Mrs. Col- fax promise to be the most agreesble affairs of their kind ever held in Washington. HERE 18 WHAT We are to see and have when Carl Schurz comes to the Senate, according to the correspondent of the Cincinnati Com- merciel. Oarl Schurz is a man of great talent; indeed, I may say that be ts a man of genius. Bat he bas Ho more heart than a hollow turnip. Na- ture, true to herself, has harmonized his outer man with bis inner parts, and it is not lovabie. Tall, thin and angular, he looks like a hawk i ‘health—ugly enoughfto and as self-opinionated and as that elon- gated azony, the pronoun ‘I, always is when lowed with two legs and set in mouon. ‘Nevertheless, I would like to see Carl in the Senate. His braiz-proud votes and ‘would stir up the heavy dullness of the cham- ber like a hegh forty-pounder booming thro fog of a m ing. He would stick bp ike a whale’s back from an even sea of sameness.”” To cur fancy, however, the picture is hardly a true one, 88 it seems to exaggerate the failings and does not do full justice to the acquirements and strong abiliues of Mr. Schurz. Besides, a men who has done as much for his country, bative and sdopied, and for personal friends, as he has dove, hus @ good deal more heart “than @ bollow tarnip.” ‘THe SENATORIAL Contzsr 1m WISconstn Presents no less than tem candidates tor the place now filled by Mr. Doolittle—the two lead- ing ones being Messrs, Matt H.
