EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. Cana? Quest a. cry HALL. Last evening | meeting was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, to consider the canal question, at which there were present J. L. Pisa, Alderman Knoight, Coescilman A. K. Bown, Revs. W. J. Walker and Green, aud a ening. deepenwg, and improving the canal; asking that Congress be requested to take early measures for causing the section of the Chesapeake and Ubio canal lying between 17tm street and Kock creek be opened; to have that canal cross Rock creek by means of an aqueduct: thus forming « perfect connection Detween that great thoroughfareand the Wash- ington canal; also, to have the channel of the branch canal along the line of James" ‘Mr. Wateon referred to the want of interest felt im this matter, and spoke of the several plans to improve the canal. The first plan, which had but few friends, was to fill up the al and cut sewers to the Potomac, which would require 35 feet cutting, and the sewers then would be on a dead level. The second pian was to arch it, but that was impracticanle © account of its cost. The arching of Tider creek in the Botanic Garden—6w0 feet in length and 30 feet span—cost $60,000. The canal was 15,005 feet im length, and it would require one and « half millions to arch it. Piles would be necessary on which to build it, for the bottom Was soft, and this would require half a million more. An arch of 60 fect would not carry o! the water, and it would cost feur millions. ‘The third plan wes to clean the canal out and make it ‘gable from Georgetown to the Eastern Branch, and it was estimated that it ‘Would cost $150 000, and it would pay. A pro- Position had been made to give the canal to a company, and unless the Corporation does something 1t may pass into acompany’s hands. The removal of the capfal had been talked of; and the best way todefeat such propositions ‘was to do something to rid the city of its name of baving the worst streets, canal. and market bouses_ Mr. Boswell said be wished the canal to be proved, but did not believe it coula be made navigable. There was but #5, left of the ap- Propriation of $75,000. If the caual was made Bavigable it would only be to long bots and boa! 3 roposed to arch the canal trom Jd wo loth screct, nd if Congress would give the ground thus saved it would more than pay | for the arching. In preparing work for the javoring men the interests of the tsx-payers must not be discarded. To arch the canal would give men employment, for it would be Tequired to be cleaned too, and he had it from Mr. Hepburn, a practical mason, that it could be arched. He suggested that no definite ac- tion be taken until a larger meeting was had. If the canal was arched, thea would South Washington become indeed the garden spot of Wasbington. ‘Mr. Depnis remarked that if no economical plan could be devised for cleaning, after arch- img.it, they bad better not talk of the arch. Mr. J. J. Calvert called attention toacommu- Bication im the Chronicle, im which the writer Proposes to arch the canal, and putin dredging machines to cleanse it. He did not see how it ‘was to bearched, if they could not raise a few thousand dollars to clean it out. Mr. Boswell said he presumed that traps would be made by which it could be cleaned. and as for the money the reckaimed land would Pay for the improvement. . Dennis said it would cost deuble to clean wt out afler it was arched. The Ubair said that the idea of reclaiming jand was an excelient one, but he doubted whether it could be done, and the basements and cellars on the Avenue would be filled up it, ‘Mr. Gideon L. Walker said that he felt great amterest im the question. The city coald not afford to arch the canal yet. It could not con- sect with the Chesapeake and Uhio canal aa- teas they odtamed the power to condemn the from west 17th street to the west end we, for the Chesapeake and Obio eae wen ie Owner of that line of land. If they Power to condemp, they could get ‘the 94,000,000 annually for trarsporting coal that J. W. Garrett now gets for carrying it to Point Leokout. Then would bave steady ‘ur. Chass Ki ~ lous ‘ . King thought it ridiculous to think arching the 5 his views on the Mr. expressed ‘question, claiming that it was terous to talk of arching the canal, but that it shoald b= deepened and made navigable.
