ee THE EVENING STAR PUBLISHED DAILY, Sunday Exceptea, WASHINGTON D. C SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1868. NS. £924. DR. ABORN on CATARRERH. vicimage WhO Sre aMicted with eataerkel com plaints, the following letter by Dr. Abore will at tract eniversel attention | ‘This fs = chronic affection ef the macus mem- brane of the gestrils or the throat, originating in irritation or Inflammation, and attemded by more or less discharge. It ts ome of the most commer, most disgusting, and, finsily. most destructive o diseases incident to the variable climate of oer porthern latitude. In ite carly stages Oaterrh often fails to attract the paticnt’s attemtion, so insidious is its xp- Preach. This ie an anfortunate circumstance, because the most fevorable period for tretament te thes unimproved, end because of the peculiar Mmposition of this civease to extend upward to the frontal sinuses, backward through the Eustachian tubes to the middle ears, and downward throuch the larynx, trackis, and brogchia to the air cells of the lungs. ‘The discharge from the affected partis at first a clear fluid, which may escape observa: unless it chance to be of ® more than usually acrid char acter As time gots on, this-gives place to a fluid that is thicker, snd of 8 yellow or yellowish green color, and stili later this may be succeeded by thick fakes or scales. In all the more advanced stages the discharges are generally of an offensive odor, causing great @nnoysnee to one’s friends and to the patient himself while bis sense of smell remains. This annoyance from the oder becomes almost beyond endorance, when, as sometimes happens, the dell- cate bones of the nose become diseased. Some cases early assume the chdracter of Dry Catarrh. There is then a feeling of uneasiness, hheat, and stiffpees in the nostrils, which are often one or both of them) closed by thickening of the mucens membrane, and thes a difficalty of breath- ing becomes a prominent symptom. On examining the nostrils in chronic Catarrh, with instruments specially adapted to that pur- Bese, we Sind its lining membrane thickened and of & deeper color than im health. There are seen Little petnts of viceration, apon which the secre thom becomes bardened and formscrvsts. When these are picked of, the diseased surface is irrt tated, and often bleeds protussly. In each case of Oatarrah the prominent #ymp- tome are determined by the direction in which the If this be upward there may be pain cver and Letween the eyes, obstruction of the lachrymal ducts, esusing the tears te flo the cheeks, and, possibly, ophthalmis. If ward, there will be thickening of the wails of the Bus tachian tubes and consequent tendency to their obstraction, intiammation of the middle ear, buz- sing sounds in the head, and impairment of hear tmg. When the extension ts jard the veice becomes Loarse or whispering and unmanagable; cough comes on. with expectoration and emacia thon, to be followed, too often, by Consumption and death Im cases where the bones of the nose become diseased, not only is the offensiveness of the breath increased, but there is # liability to serious personal deformities, among waich is fattening of [In view of the large number of perteus-<f thir i disease extends the nose. ‘The swallowing of catarrhal secretions deranges the fonctions of the stomach. causing indigestion ond less of appetite Dehility, paleness, inssitade, headache. and disturbance ef mind soen follow. instances the mental affection is one of frritability, the patient being unduly annoyed by ail the little perplexities of life. In others the promivent feeling is that of melancholy or depres- ston of spirits, when the invalid cam see mo hope for himself. and none for his affairs. AUasion has been made to the extension of Ca- tarrb by continuity of surface along the natural ‘Gir passages to the substance of the lungs, thas «eusing Consumption and death. In this con- ection it should also be remembered that the air which enters the lungsof « catarrhal patient is, every breath of it, pcisoned by exhalations from tbe foul secretions ef the diseased surtace. By wach air the bicod capmot be properly purified end made fit to impart healthy vigor in ite un- ending circuit to all and every part of the animal mechanism. One would sappese that this con- sideration slone would pe sufficient to induce every person thas afiicted to make carly applica ton for relief. ‘The treatment of Caterrh is in part constita- tional, whereby the energivs of the whole system sre called to aid in expelling its destructive en- omy. Washington News and Gossip, THE ALAska FcND.—The House Vommittee on Pablic Expenditures are still imvestizating the use made of the money paid for Alisiea but nothing of special interest Ras brew deve!- oped since our last report of the testimony. Mr. Hinton, who, it is undersieod, in a letter to | the Worcester Spy, first geve sewspaper pab- lici'y im a tangible form io the rumo~s of cor- Tuption, Was examined yesterday, bat his evi deuce revealed the duct thot atl he kaew of the mutter was irom hearsay, and that he did not and does not now,:kpow ef the truth of the Teports to waict he zave carrency. Secre ary Seward was before the committce this morning asa volamiery wiiecss, and mde Asiatement to the effect that he Kaew nothing of any money baving been patd to secare the passage of the Alasia appropriation bill, and that the expenditures of the Siaie Dep.rimeat im tbe mater were moc over 850). He had in, stigated the publication of several articles urz. ing the pas:age of the bill, which were grata. itously published im several newspapers, and be was rleo consulted by Mr. de Storck! as to roprieiy of employing Hon. Rovert J. F, and be Bad recommended that gentir. man ¢s a man of fine legal attainments, but he had ro krowledge of any payments made to ™, oF toany one else without authority of b law. Mr. James Rankin Young, the Washington Tepreseutative of the New York Zritune. and Mr.W.S. Smith, manager of the Evening Press Association, were also before the committee thie morning; but, so far as we can learn, no new fects were elicited Mr. Young testified in substance that he knew nothing of the mat- tor under invesii beard from irresponsible persons, read in the newspapers. He said that he had toen charged with having been paid $5, and the paper with which he was connected the sam of $20,000. He denied having received any money or of ever having ten promised any, or even approrched on the subject. He opposed the Alaska purchase bitterly in his correspondence, as did also his news- Paper editorially. He said that a man named Martin bad called on him at his office and presented a list of names of persons which he said he was willing to swear had been paid morey for lobby influence. He thought Mar- tin an adventurer and unirasiworthy. At is understood thet the commitiee have sig- Dified to the Depariment of State their readi- Devs to receive any statement the members of the Russtan Legation here might wish to make on the subject, but it ix not likely that anything will be developed from that source. Tae INTERNAL REVENUE CommtsstonEr- snir.—It seems to be geperaliy understood now that Mr. Commissioner Rollins will re- main in oifice until after the 4th of March next, or, at least, that he will certaiply not send in bis contemplated resignation until Congress ball have reassembled after the holiday veea- tion. That be has long been enxious to retir= from the position, which at the best is an ex- ceedingly labori one, is well known, and that he has not done so before this time is entire due, as bis friends affirm, to considerations of a public character and to circumstances which he was unable to direct, bat to the results of which he could not as an offiver or a citrzen, be blind. This desire on the part of Mr. R. was based on grounds partly private and partly public in thew character. He bas long felt that his family, in which ill health bas made serious inroads, has & just claim to more of b's time and care than an official place so exscting as the one he fills will allow him to give: bat snother reason, not less potent, is to be found n the tact, always sirenuously urged by him, that he bas teen unjustly beld. by the public not familiar with the cireumstances of the case, responsible for the shortcomings and excesse3 of his official subordinates, with the appoint- ment of whom he has bad nothing to do and over whom, from the very pature of things, be could not exercise proper control,—a phase of the case which was dwelt upon at some length, it is said, in his testimony before the sub-committee on Reirenchment on Thursday last. These considerations are as weighty now as ever; but, in deference to the advice of a very large number of gentlemen in public and pri- vate life, whoce views are entitled to respectful atieation, and to avoid complications which would be as embarrassing as profitless, it is likely that he will pursue the course indicated sbove, and continue to bold the office until his successor shall be appointed by the President elect, after bis induction into office.
