DR. ABORN oN CATARRH,. [In view of the large number of persons of thir vicinage who are aMlicted with eatarrhal com- viaints, the following letter by Dr. Aborn will at tract aniversal attention } This i+ ehronic affection ef the mucus mem- brane of the nostrils oF the throat, originating in | irritation or inflammation, and attended by more | or jeas discharge. It is one of the most common, most disgusting, sud, finally. most destructive of diseases incident to the variable climate of our Bortbern latitude. In ite early stages Oatarrb often fails to attract the patients attention, so insidious is its ap- proach. This is an unfortumate circumstance, because the most favorable period for tretament im thus unimproved, and because of the peculiar disposition of this disease to extend upward to the frontal sinuses, backward through the Bustachien tubes to the middle ears, snd downward through the larynx, trachia, sud bronchis to the sir cells of the tunes. The discharge from the affected partis at first clear Suid, which may escape observation, unless it chance to be of © more than usually acrid char acter. As time goes on, this gives place tos flula that is thicKer, and of @ yellow or yellowish green color, and still later this ray be succeeded by thick Takes or ecales. In all the more advanced stages the discharzes are generally of an offensive odor, causing great Snnoysnce to one’s friends aad to the patient *imself while bis sense of smell remairs. This Snboyance from the odor becomes almost beyond endctrance, when, a8 sometimes happe! the deli- cate bones of the nose bec me disea: Some cases carly sesume the character ef Dry Catarrh. There is th & feeling of uneasiness, Leet, end sticTaess in the nostrils, which are often (one or both of them) closed by thickening of the intcous membrane, and thas a difficulty of breath- ing becomess prominent symptom. On examining the nostrils in chronic Catarrh, with instruments specially wlapted to that pur- Bete, we find its linia membrane thickened and of & deeper color thar in bealth. There are seen little peints of ules ation, upou which the secre. thom becomes bardened sad Whea @ diseased surface is irri ms Crusis. theres are picked off . 4, and often bleeds protessly. Invach caseof Catarrah the prominent syinp- tems are cetermined by the direction in which the If this be upward there may be in over and between the eyes, obstruction of tne disease extends lacbryms! ducts, causing the tears te flow over the If backward, there will be thickening of the walls of the Eas it tendency to their obstruction, fntiammation of the middle ear, buz- and, poembly, ophthaimt chee tachian tubes and conseju zing sounds in the head, and impairment of hear When the extension is downward the veice Pecomes hoarse or whispering and unmanagable we cough comes on, with expectoration and emacia tion. to be followed, too oftem, by Consumption aud | death Tn cases where the bones of the nose become diseased, not only is » offensiveneas of the Lreath increased, but there fs @ Lisbility to serious personal deformities, smoog whic the nese. ‘The swallowing of catarrlal eccretions deranges the functions of the stomach, causing indigestion end lens of appetite. Debslity, paleness, lassitude, headache, and disturbance ef mind soen follow. In tome inetances the mental affection is one of ‘eritability, the patient being unduly anpoyed by all the little perplexities of life. In others the prominent feeling ia that of melancholy or deprea- sion of spirits, when the invalid cam see no hope for himself, and pone for Lis afairs, AU asion has been made to the exteasion of Ca- tarrh by continuity of surface along the nataral air-passsges to the substance of the lungs, thas causing Consumption and death. In th! nection it should also be remembered that the air which enters the lungsof s catarrhal paticnt is, every breath of it, pcisored by exhalations from the fowl secretions ef the diseased surtace. By such air the blood cansot be properly purified end made ft to impart hesithy vigor in its aa- ng circuit to all and every pertof the eaima! mechanism. One would suppose that this con- sideration alone would ve sufficient to induce | every person thus afilicted to make early applica tice for reief. The treaiment of Catarrh is in part constitu- tictal, whereby the energi-s of the whole system ere called to aid in expelling ite destructive en- «my Itisin part local, whereby the discharge is ude leas cflensive, diminished, and fiually arrest +c. whereby the ulcerated surface is healed and reetcred to its normal condition. is fatiening of e DR.
