As briefly annoanced yesterday, & meeting of this association, organized for the purposes of obiaining the right of franchise for woman. and to procute for them all other privilegesallowed to men, was held Monday v ght im the hall of the third story of Unwa League building. About ome hundred and fifty persons were present, comprising civilians, military mei politicians, humanitarians, mate and female, white and colored, adults and children, a large number of whom, jadging from their snicker. ing. had no respect for the canse, but were drawn there from curiosity. At eight o’clock, the meeting was called to order by Prof. Will- cox, who, in conjunction with George T. Lownivg, colored, filled the position of presid- ing officer during the evening. Tue first speaker introduced was— Rev. Warwick Martin,of Chicago, who replied tothe objection that woman could not bear arms. He had seen one woman who stood by her brother during the rebellion in twenty-seven battles, and yet lived. Even granting she could not fight, still she could sustain those who are tighting, and many of the successes Fained Were owing to her exertions; besides have been put down withoat her efforts. She had as maci to de, im bis opinion, with the supprestion of the rebellion as General Grant or General Sher- man. Ithad been alleged that tim would be consumed in order tor women to acqnamt themselves with the political history of the country: but he could easily meet tais objec. thon. the time now spent in reading novels d light Uterature could be more properly sppropriaied in reading political mattor. Prot. Willson (celored) contended that woman's sphere was at home, aud so far from Such # occupation or commingling with poltties exalting ber. it would be pollution and degradation. Women had never yet hoaded any ref Fa movement, Ms jor Wells looked to the men to push for. wad this great reform movement, whose hearts, he ssid, were more in the work than the Women; for calculation would prove that at thas time there were one hundred aan in the cuuse where there was one woman. The work must be don by the men, who knew what they Were talking about; but the women dia not. He was a woman's rights man, and after Attending a meeting of the association Inst Monday night he went home, when his wife asked lim where he had been’ His reply was that he bad been to the women’s rights meeting; to which she replied, “You had better be at joae attending to ‘woman's rights hire.” (Laughter.) Women had no time to urge the subject, and were not prepared for it; in fact, many of those who were already discussing the matter were ding more harm than good. If Prof. Willson was so much of the opinion that the political arena was but a cess-pool of cor- ruption, he would like to know why it was that he (the Professor) wanted to get into it so much, Willcox, at the conelasion of Major remarks, sprang to his feet, an‘, siap- ping bis hand violentiy on the table, deny that the women are behind the times, and that they bave never worked any reforms. It is vot so, as I personally kno Major Wells.—«Then, why ain't the women heve to-night! Prof. Willcox.—No, they are not here, and it is because of the contemptible sneers indulged im towards them by some of the men.” [Ap- lause ] “Don’t applaud ma; 1am in earnest ia what I say.” The speaker made some fur- ther remarks, and concluded with an earnest appeal for money, at the same time taking his hat and passiag it through the audience for change Mr. H. 1D.
