Between ten and eleven o'clock yesterday Mr. William Shsunvessey, Iate proprietor of a restaurant on Delaware aveaucnear the corner of H street, died as 1s alleged from a wound re- ceived on Wednesday Ja-',tr¢m a brick thrown by Michael Nasb, a 7 sideut of the same neigh- borbood. Itappears that Nach went into the restaurant, and after taking drink left some money with Shaunnessey for safe-keeping. He then departed, but soon returued and got his money, When be commenced abusing with very strong Ispguace a man named Jobn F. Parker, ap ex-Baltimore iceman, who was sitting "im the room. Mr. Shaunnessey in- formed Nash that be would tolerate no such abuse towards & person stopping in his house, and afters repetition of the abuse he put Nash out of the house, who went into the street aud picked up a brick. Upon this Mr, S. went out, and Mrs. S. seized hold of him and detained him. In the meantime Nash procured a half brick, threw it, and made an ugly wound just over the right eye of Mr. Shaunnessey, break. img the skull At the same time the brick struck Mrs. S.on the head. Mr. Parker swore out a warrant before Justice Walter, chirzing Nash with assault and battery with intent to kill, and he was arrested by officer Fuss, and locked up at the Fourth Ward station. At ten o'clock this morning a jury of inquest was summoned composed of Jacod L Stentz, foreman,) Henry Birschier, Charles Davis, J W. Knott. Henry Walker, J. K- Boovie, Join Mornis, Louis K. Fechtig. Jon W. McCreery, Samuel Nanemaks, Deunis Connell, and Se- bastian Bauer, who, in the presence of Dr. W W. Potter, coroner, Dr. Eilictc,and Mr. Sclint- hirst, druggist, examined the wouad inilic upon the deceased, at his residenc», aud then repaired to the Fourth Ward n-house, where the following testimony wus Jomes A. Cook sworn: Witness succeeded Mr. Bowen as Register on the 12th of May. He was sworn in and was the only one of the Board that took the oath of office. Never sat in re- gistration of the Fitth Ward, except in the two days of revising the lists, Mr. ©. described tne proceedings by which Mr. Noyes furnished certificates on the eiection day. Some tour or five hundred persons obtained certificates from Mr. Noyes. Cross-examined: Witness concurred, and aid- ed Mr. Noyes in furnishing the certificates mentioned, Mr. Bowen (recalled:) Wiiness had seen the name of Bir. D. C. Forney placed on the regis- tration lists; but on examination of the lists on election day the name was not there, nor was there any mark to show that it bad been erased. TO-DAY, S. V. Noyes recalied.— Witness asked the priv- dege of making an explanation as to the testi- mony given on Sainrday, which he considered An imputation on bis character, before answer- ing any questions from counsel. Mr. Cook said he would so frame his ques- tions as to give witness the opportunity of making the explanation. Witness was appointed clerk to the board; this year. Clarence B. Barton (areporter on the Chronic/e) was appointed also a clerk—an as- sistant. When the registration was completed they were placed in the hands of the young men he hod previously named for copying, and it was done in & back room on 9th street. He explained that if any leat bad been cut ont there would be a difference of 120, and such ditlerence could not be found on examining the bocks. He would put as charitable view as possible on Mr Kowen's statement that he was mistaken.
