EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the Distriet WASHINGTON OITy: THURSDAY.......... OCTOBER 5, 126%, | ———————_—. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | SES OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIO AND CTHER MATTER. ‘ie £ LIFE INSURANCE. iTOR Stag:—In the “Star” of the 16th | sppeared begining as heeds no argument to convince a prodent man of the advantages of P insuring bis hie. Lt offers S most remuneratiye return for what he may invest in that way, of which ‘he can avail himself in his old apes ed | the benefit of his family when he is 10 with them.” Now esa constant reader of the the | STAR, and one anxious to provide in some way | SEMDGL the wants of my family, after £ have | been taken from them, I wish to know wnat Teason the writer of that article bad tor saying that “it needs no argament to conv eo 8 pra- deut man of the sdvantages of ins: his itfe.” “Phe questions that have preseute 1 them. selves not only to my mind, but to hundreds of | hers amxious about the matter are: Ist, is it safe toimvestmouey in these companiss ‘as a | means of support for our tamilies wm future? 4. What reasonable assurances have we that | To illustrate: In S the name of Waraer, liv York, insured his life for $10,000 in each of | “ptember, 1856, a man, by | ig in the city of New | three prominent companies of the coun “Equitable” and “(uardian,” of New and a company in the State of Maine. | ner being somewhat advanced in years, was | required to pay su extra premiu bat aside from this, experienced no diffi ng bis policies, the physicians of each company — & thorough examination, aud pronot apg hima fit subject to take risks upon. | In the spring of the { wing year Warner died suddenly of cholic. His heirs, or those for whem these policies of insurance were taken, presented their claius to the surance com- panies for psymeut. The “Equitable,” to its | credit, promptly paid its policy upon the pre- sentation of proper evidence of death, bat not so with the other companies, the “Guardian” and the Maine company. These com- panies utterly refused to pay their risks, tue former upon the plea that Warner deceived the physicians in his examination. At the suggestion of the company. te: matter was submitted to a referee, m. C. Wet- More, & prominent member of the bar of New York, and by him thoroughly investigated. He decided that the company bad tairiy in- | sured the deceased, he having complied with all the requirements of sai ¥. and that | bis heirs were just! emitted to the insurance | guaranteed by the company. From this | the company appe td Sm } jones, | | | os ap general term, iges Morrell, and Gorvin, and were there t beaten again, the court unanimously deciding that the company were bound to pa msurance. Beaten | twice after a fulland impartial hearimg of the | case the company still refused to abut and | bave taken the case to the Court of Appeals. In the meantime, the parties insured must wait for their money. What their circumstances are I know not. Did the company litigate this case | op the ground that Warner having deceived | them, the holder of the policy had no just | claim agi Hae Dave offered to com- promise and logel, the claimant, something ike Yee,n10" Would they do this if they believed they had any chance of establishing their defence! ‘The facts of this can all be verified by referring tothe New York Evening Post of May 5th, also containing editorial comments on the case. Here is the trouble to be met with. Most per- sons holding policies of life insurance are not a circumstances to sustain a costly course of litigation with wealthy companies, and would Father forfeit their claim than go to law to ob- tain it, with a possible chance of losing more With it. These are facts that ought to be gen- erally known, and as the STAR is amedium for communicating facts to the people, having re- cently published the Jersey City and New York life insurance swindies, we offer this, | that all having due knowledge thereof may govern themselves accordingly. INsuRER. ‘The above communication is rather long for the crowded columns of the STAR, but it is ‘Written m a seeming spirit of fairness and can- | dor, and on a subject of interest to all classes of | the community. For this reason, and because it | embodies the gist of the objections most com- monly urged against the system of Life In- surance, we make room for it, believing, as we do, that there is not a single point in it which | cannot be met and answered to the entire satis- faction of any honest aud dispassionate in- quirer. “Insurer,” in the first place, wishes to know ‘what reason we bave for saying that “it needs ‘Bo argument to convince & prudent man of the advantages of suring his life.” The sentence quoted was written advisedly. Taking for granted that a prudent man is one who is anxious, like our correspondent, to provide in | some way for the wants of his family when he | 38 taken from them; taking for granted, aiso, ‘that he would desire to invest his savings for that purpose, in whatever manner would yield | the greatest aud most certain return possible: } it remains only to prove that Life Insurance | fulfils these requirements: amd we reiterate | that that needs no argument, as it can be mathematically demonstrated and is not subs | ject for logic, bata matier of calculation. Lite Assurance in its ordinary character is a means | Of securmg by a present payment in fuil, or of ‘an annual payment; a sum to be realized after | the death of the party. The principle on which | it mainly rests is that, while the darstion of the life ot one person is of all things the most un- | certain, it 1 possi to ascertain with great certainty how many of a multitud- of persons ofa particular age will die within next year, ‘how many im the second year, how many in the third, and so on. This rate of mortality ard the rate of interest upon money are the | two principal dataon which Life Insurance Practically depends. The latter does not ad- ‘Mit of the same certainty as the former, but most of the modern compamies allow more than enough margin to cov geney. We have not space mer tims to enter into the calculations which show Bow the tables of the rates of mortality are ad- justed with almost as much exactness as the multiplication table, or to point out the rela. tive advantages and disadvantages of propri- | etary or mutual companies; but any of our | Teaders who are anxious to be enlightened on | ‘the subject will find the matter fally and im- partially set forth im several of the most re- liable works on political economy. T: ‘y will | see that the principles on whieh the system is } it the investments e profitable the tables of any of the compan- | | | tes will show. Our correspondent does not dispute that fact, but harps on the risk, and doth his queries might have been comprised in the question, Is it safe to invest in Life lnsu- Fance Companies 1 Weanswer unequivocally | and devidedly, Yes, as safe as any other inyest- | ment, much safer than most others. No in- vestment {8 perfectly safe. Merchandise is | Muctuating and perishable; coin may be lost or stolen; paper money or bonds may share the | same fate, and are subject to the additional | Tisks of destruction by fire or deprecistion companies may fail; banks may break; stocks so down; and even real estate, cousidered the most stable of possessions, may rest upon | an uncertain fitle or depreciate In value. No earthly investment can bs considered entirely secure, but lif insarance is among the safest. As we bave already said, the principios | upon which the system is foynded are sound 0 sound that if the companies were all man. aged by capable and honest men, investments therein would be secure beyond all question, | but the fraudty of human nature ts au element of weakness, which enters into the calcul:tion, and brings im doubt where otherwise would be | certainty, humanty speaking. Let “lasurer,” however, go-iute the matter as eantiousiy as be would mto any other important basiaes: arrangement; let him examine carefully as to the character and standing of the men who are to bave the management of his meaus; and it he is willing. mot to sacrifice safety tor cheap- ness, but to pay a fair rate for the benefit he Wishes to secure, he will find maay companies, composed of men of undoubted integrity, who Will deal honestly with the means entrusted | to them. There are plenty of men who patronage what Carlisle calls the “cheap and masty. aud who even in a matter so impor- tat as this of life insurance, will for the sake of saving @ dollar or two a year, get insured im ® company of which they know nothing except that it underbids others. If these mem lose their investments it ie their own fault, ‘The case noticed by “Insarer” proves noth- img. in every Kind of investment htigation msy arise. One suck case as this obtains no- | | families in our land relie | our readers. any possible contin. | MEETI toriety through the newspapers, while millions | ot dollars are quistly paid every year to the families of he insured, without 4 word being” said about it. The experience of thousands of yy the forethought of husbands and fathers, the promptaces of the companies in meeting their obligations, is worth volumes of argument to prove the safety of such imvestments. Lt “Imsurer” examine the list of any one of the older respon- sible companies, of the deaths of insurers for a single year, and the amounts paid, and he will soon se@ how insignificant one case of litigatiog is against the hundreds ot cases paid without question. The best companies are seldom or never in court If they were, it ‘Would not be surprising, for the papers chron- icle a dozen cases of fraud against the companies to one case of suits for payment brought against them. It isa duty they owe to those hone=tly insured that they should not be imposed upon, and that company is u: Worthy of trust which will not examine care- fully into a doubtful case, and if there is sus- Picion of fraud, resist payment until all doubts sreremoved. That companies should be will+ ing to compromise, however, even in cases they are right, is net surprising, be- cause the publication of every such case, as the one mentioned, dames the business of the contesting company, as even “Insurer” would be willing to allow, who cites this particular one as agains: all Life Insurance Companies. juries in such cases do not generally give the companies the benefit of the doubt, if there happens to be one. We bave confined ourselves in this article to noticing the communication of “Ansurer," who, it is likely. represents the views of others of There are other points in con- nection with the subject which we proposed to notice, but we have already taken up consid- erable space, and will be compelled to defer their consideration to another day.
