G. Naylor has brought suit against Mr. Alex. R.Sbepherd, claiming damages to the amoani of $..000. This suit grows out of a recent dif- culty between the purties, who ate both well known citizens. Hlection of Uificers—A Lively Time, A meeting of the First Ward Repuolican Club was heid last might at the Theological Ins stitute building, corner of Twenty-secoad and I streets. The meeting was called to order at soclock by Wm. H. Lewis, the Secretar shortly aiterwards, Carter A. Stewart, 8 dent ppeared, And conducted the proceedings of the meeting throughont the evening. ‘The first business in order being the electi of officers,the Chair invited nomin; % Diessrs. Isaiah Bauldin and Cornelius Clarke, (colored,) aud O. S. Baker, (white,) were nawed for President. Upon & count it wasas- ceriained that Mr. Boaldin was the choice of the meeting, and he was therefore declared unanimously elected, The election of First Vice President being vext in order, Cornelius Clarke (colored) nom)- pated Mr. O.S. Baker, saying there had for some time been two “fractions” of the party in the ward, and he offered Mr. B.'s name with the belief that his uuanimous election would be the olive branch for the future harmony of the Republicans of the ward. Thomas Mar‘in (colored) was nominated, but declined im a beat speech, and offered, as a substitute, the nxme of Mr.Wm_ M. Slowen,a well-known apothecary of the First Ward. * A Voice.—“Is Mr Slowen in the house? ft not, I am opposed to the election of any mao who is not present,” Thomas Martin.—“He is not here, I believe. But suppose he is net; I don’t think Mr. Isaiah Bouldin are here either.” ; Wm. H. Lewis (colored).—“Mr. Slowen is a good Republican, and would make a good officer.” ‘Mr. Bowen , (colored) —“Yes, a very good Repubucan. He ran on an independent ticket a short while since.” Here considerable excitement was manitested, ‘when the Chair interposed, and deprecated the “prosecution” which some members were dis. posed to heap upon Mr. Siowen. He hop. i snch feelings would be laid aside, and Mr. name would be treated with the'same respect as other nominees. The vote was then fit taken on Mr. Baker's nomination, when he was dectared elected. Messrs. Wim. ML. Slowen (white) and Wm. H. Lewis and Robert Thompson (colored) were nominated for the office of Second Vice Presi dent. Thompson decline’. The vote was then taken om the names of Messrs. Slowen sud Lewis.which, upon a count, showed that there Were ¢ighty-four votes cast for each momiuee, and it was accordingly decided to go into an: other vote. Cornelius Clarke (colored) addressed the meeting against the nomination of Mr. Slowen, because he did not believe that gentleman cared to, or could, serve. He beheved that he would much prefer attending to bis private business. Thomas Martin (colored) replied, that he did not think Clarke bad been authorized to make any such statement, and it was not fair tomake such announcement. If elected, be believed Mr. Slowen would accept the position and make a faithfal officer. ‘The vote was then taken, and after much bickering and contusion the tellers reporved that they had counted seventy-eight votes for Dir. Lewis and seventy-four for Mr. Slowen. Therefore Mr. Lewis was declared elected. Mr. E.Ciarke and David E. Warner, (colored, ) were nominated for the office of ‘Secretary. Interrogatories with reference to the character of the nominers elicited remarks trom the Chair, who indorsed noth candidates, but more especially Mr. Clarke, who, he said, belonged to the same church that he did. [A voice — “Ob, pshay:! that don’t make him any better than any one else.) Mr. Clarke was elected Secretary. Daniel E. Warner was then elected Assistant Secretary without opposition. For the office of Treasurer, Alexander Hen: derson, (colored) was first put in nomination: whereupon great contusion ensued, in the idst of which there were cries of “Oh, ob,” Yo,” “Never,” &c., from all parts of the hall, and mot‘ons to Iny the nomination on the table.
