HowarD.—General Howard, Com- missioner of the Freedmen’s Burean, to-day received a report from Brevet Mayor 0. H, Howard, Sub-A:sistant Commissioner of the Burean for the State of Georgia, giving an count ofthe recent riot at Camilla, in that State. Major Howard relates the circumstances ot the riot as already published, and says: Ou the evening of the 19th he was waited upon bya large body of ireeamen, much excited, who expressed their desire to proceed at once on foot to Canfilla to the rescue of the Republicans there. Major H, counselled them co remain quiet, promising that the atfair a: Camilla should be thoroughty investigated, and if any gtvat wrong had been done the proper legal remedy should be applied, and the freedmen then departed apparently satisfied. At ten miles trom Camilla the mob was still pursuing and shooting the fugitives. Major Howard says: “It is believed that the arms brought to Albany recently, consigned to Rush, Johnson & Co., were sent to Camilla. It is also cad that J.W. Armstrong, Jr., of the Young Men’s Democratic Club, went to Ca- milla for the purpose of instigating the people there to prevent the speaking.” He torwards a partial list of the killed and wounded, num- bering thirty-tour, all of whom were treedmen, except three. A letter from John Murphy, who was with the freedmen, was also received by General Howard, in which he says the party was fired upon when entering the town, and several freedmen were wounded, but Mr. Pierce, the candidate for Congress, was not hurt. Marphy says be was follow: men, who overtook and handled him pretty roughly, striking him over the head with a gun. He thinks there were two or three hun- dred shots fired in all. This report of Major Howard was written immediately atter the riot, but a full report of the affair, after thorough investigation, i 5 shortly expected trom General Sibley, the Com- missioner of the Burean tor that State. A later report from the Sub- Assistant Com- missioner, dated Headquarters of tbe Bureau, cay oe |. 20th, addressed to Col. J. gots » A. A.G., on the staff of Gen. The white men. his captors, boas’ to new comers of twelve freedmen killed in one pond near Dr. Dasher’s, two miles from Camilla, Another freedmar took refuge ina swamp, where he Jay concealed all night, with tour others near him. He states that during the early part ot the night the white men were scouring the woods, shouting, cursing and shooting the freedmen. The pursuers, he says, were ac- companied by bloodhounds, and he heard the cries and shriek: the fugitives as they were eaught by the dogs and shot. Two of the men near bim becoming frightened, endeavored to escape, and both were shot within his hearmg. «It was reported to me as late as this 4 p.m, that up to & o'clock this morning they were still pursuing the freedmen with horses and logs. “There has been intense excitement in town all day. The town hgs been filled with freed .| men. They have swarmed about my office by hundreds,“ 1t has been difficult to restrain them from proceeding en masse to Camilla. I have addresved them, counselling pence and order, telling them that the offenders should ba punished, and their lives protected. But I bave no heart for my work. I felt noassur- ance that my promises would ever be fulfilled. The Mayor addressed them, as did some citi- zens, but the freed people scoffed at them and would not listen to them, and I had the whole burden to bear. At this hour, midnight, all is quiet. He states, in conclusion, that he would take affidavits of wounded men and others and an official report . ‘ajor Howard also -ends a telegram to Capt. Frank Gallagher, A. A.
