We note with satisfaction the growing oppo- sition to the system of corporal punishment as applied in our Public Schools. Among those who have recently taken crouad against ths relic of barbaric ag-s is Mr. S.S. Randall, of New York, widely known in connection with educational matters. In bis recent work on | Popular Education, by far the most thought- ful and suggestive that has yet appeared on | this subject, he holds that the exhibition of passion, whether it assume the for.n of irrita- bility, peevishness, harshness of expreesion, inequality of temper or corporal inflictions, is wholly repugrant to every sound theory or enlightened conception of imtellectaal of mora’ | education. If, athe advocates for the reten- fon of physical punishment in our elementary institutions of learning contend, the imteresis of education im its most comprehensive sense, including the development of the intell:2tual s well as the moral nature, are in trath pro- moted by these meaas, a phenomenon would be presented strikingly at variance with the ordinary results of mea’ philosophy as de- duced trom the mo~t compreheasive and th ough examination ef humanity in all its recog- nized elements. If by the infliction of stripes: by corporal chastisement other tian such as may be designed to effect needfal restraint from the perpetuation of evil or mischief, oF to se- cure obedience to the reasonable requisitions of the teacher, the intellectual powers ste devel- | oped or strengthened, or the moral faculties cultivated aud expanded, a new and distinct | element of knowledge exists not heretofore | emumerated by philosophers or educationist:— | an elemert, too, which is always at nand, and one but too congenial to a certain cla-s of minds, which, unfortunately for the interests of education, hes long exercised an important influence over the details of elementary public instruction. The ablest writers on educational topies, both ir Europe and America, not only of the present day, but from the earlie-t period of modern civilization—p: al and experi. | enced teachers, whose sucess in the commu- | nication of knowledge and the formation of character bas been mo-t abundsut and satis- tactory—and by far the greater portion of those who im 8p official capacity have been called upon to superintend this extensive department of our political and social economy, have con- curred inthe uniform aud repe ted exp: ston of the inadequacy, inexprdiency and in- jurious tendency of this mode of dize'pline Se powerful, uaiversal and strong has been the mamifestation of an enligh'one1 public opmion in this respect, that while in nine out of ten, and perhaps a still larger proportion, of the public schools of Germany, France: and Holland, and imall those rstitutions which we have during nearly a quartpae! « centary regarded as the most perf is, thse spe. cies of pumshment has entirely disappeared, in our own schools it bas veen driven to tha very utmost verge of toleration, and is with gratifying unanimity recognized only as the | “forlorn hope,” the ultimate resort when all | other means of discipline Rave been faithfully and perseveringly attempted and failed. “Now ror Mar holds her Stace el —On Monday Maine be.ore felt. Both parties have made great ex- eruons, but the heaviet work ba> probaply | 2. been done by the Republicans within the last two weeks. They feel confident of carrying | the State by twenty thousand majority, and their opponents seem willing to concede that will go Republican by a considerably in- creased majority over tiatof las. year. We notice that the Democratic papers in the vicin- ity of the fight do not seem to expect mach from Maine, and the Boston /’os. of yesterday says, rather petulantly: -If the voters of Maine do not pertectly un- derstand the great questions at issue it is their ult, and if they do not possess spiritand patriotism enough to take a step toward a re- lief irom the burdens which oppress them and greater evils which threaten taem, then the Radicals will incre se their usual twenty thou- sand majority on Monday, and the Republic b= brought nearer the brink of that pri ‘tpice to- ward which ithas been rapidiy approaching for more than thre y: FArLvre or Co-oreeative STORES.—The “Manhattan Grocery aud Provision Associa- tion” of New York, we see, has proved a fail- ure. ‘The same bas been the case with the two or three enterprises of the sort undertaken in this city. They were manage by capable, ex- perienced persons, but there seemrd to be some inherent defect in the system, that prove fatal > them. The Manhattan store sunk about 500 during the time it was in operation. The truth probably is, that the grocery busi- ness demands ap amount of experience, knowl- edge of prices, and tact in purchasing, that makes competit/on with the regular dealers aa up-bill business. Moore, Intelligencer Building, we have: A Dictionary of the Bible, Comprising its Antiquities, Biography, Geography, and Nat- ural History. Edited by William Smuth, Class- ical Examiner of the University ot London. Hartford, Conn. S. 8. Scranton & Co. We haye already notic:d favorably some of the specimen chapters of this book, and find the work as 2 whole equally meritorious. This Dictionary embodies the results of the most recent research and of the ripest Biblical scholarship. The description of places and names, animals, plants, minerals, customs, &c., &e., to which reference is made in the Hible, seems to be singularly complete. A suthciently full history and analysis of ¢-.ch of the books of the Bible is given, together with biographical sketches of rach of the inspired penmen, and of all the historical characters mentioned in the Bible. The explanations of the work, we should add, Baye no denominational or sectional coloring, and it is therefore equally valuable to Bible readers ot every diversity of belief, —_—_—______ CYCLONE AT DARNEsTows,— Between two and three o'clock, on Thursday of last week, a terrific tornado passed over the village of Darne-town, in this county.
