There seems to be a growing disposition in the different American cities to test other forms of pavement than the stone pavement, so ob- jectionable m many respects. The weight of evidence from experience im various localities seems to be largely in favor of wood pave- In Baltimore, the property holders on © street. between St. Pauland Charles { the new ordinance of that city, giving to the property holders the privilege of sele img the material for paving, and haye con- tracted for the repaving of that portion of the street above alluded to with what is Known as the Nicholson pavement. This style of wood pavement is much in use, but there ws another kand of wood pavement said to be greatly sn- Pperior toit in durability, cheapness, and the capability of being taken np coavenisntly for repairs. It is rather remarkable that wood pavement in such elsewhere has never been tested in Washington. Probably there is no other city m the country so well adapted to its use. We have none of the heavy Grayage of commercial cities, requiring clumsy blocks of rough stone to make a pavement equal to the enormous pressure, and to eaable the struggling Aorses to get a foothold in the mequaliues of surface. What we re- quire essentially in Washington are smooth, clean streets, suitable for light vehicles. We want, if possible, to get rid ef the chronic puisances of dust and mud. This can never be done on our wide streets and avenues so long as the paving material is of stone. The constant attrition from the passage of carriages | over a stone pavement serves to make a fine granitic dust, caught up by every wind, and | notoriously the most injurious to the throat and Jungs of apy substance that can be intro- duced to them. With the large amount of streetage in Washington, the quantity of such dust manufactured constantly is enormuss serving iu dry weather not only to blind and eboke every body, but to spoil all the finer goods exposed for sale in our stores. In wet weather this dust is converted mtoa most ot- fensive mud, im favor with nobody but the boot-blacks and the venders of over-shoes. Now Jet us suppose these same streets laid with a firm level payement of wood. Would be changed as by magic. The dus: would be buried “out of sight and out of mind:” and there would be no material to make more dust. Without dust there would of course be no mud. What an improvement it would be to Pennsylvania avenue to have it paved im this way. This street, by its fine Unes and magnificens proportions, always at- tracts the admiration ef visitors, and the class oi buildings Iately erected upon it are ot a style to correspond with the noble character of the street, but it has a great drawback in its detestable pavement, full of holes and jutung stones, over which vehicles must creep at a snail's pace, or pay the penalty of a speedy trip to the carriage mender. Pennsylvania avenue ought to be the finest drive in the world, and would be if paved in the manner we have de- scribed. But there is not a street in the city that would not be immeasurably improved, and the property on it doubled in value, by a dry, smooth, notseless pavement, tree from dust and mud. If our City Councils wish to Gistinguish themselves most creditably, they Will speedily enter upon the work of provid- ing & style of pavement for the streets of Wash- ington such as is suited to the needs of the city, and ss will remedy the great defecis of the Present system. Tse Sret oy THE St: For many years the astronomers have noted that acoid season has been associated with the appearance of large spots on the disk of the sun, or, rather, large holes in the 1uminous atmosphere of the sun. ‘The past spring and early summer, noted as the coolest for years, was distinguished by the ap- pearance of the largest and most remarkable sun-spot ever seen. The New Haven astrono- mers bave been measuring this spot with the following results. In length it is 55,500 miles, the black portion extending for 24,000 miles; or, to give a more familiar idea of its magnitade, two planets, each as large as our earth, could have been enguifrd within this chasm without squeezing. The periphery of the central spot was mettled with black and gray dots. In ap- pearance it somewhat resembled & capital (, or & comet with a curled tail surrounded by an infinite pumber of small specks. The greater Giameter of tais sun-spot extended nearly due ast and west, that portion spoken of above as the tail curving round to the north.
