The reason fiven by Republican authorities is that the » counting on a sure majority of certainly 00), are supine, while their opponents are Working like beavers. In Chicago and the northwestern part of the State the Republi- | caus have entered upon a close capyass, and cisim that they will carry that city by a ma- jority of at least seven thousand, and the three {| notthern Congressional districts of the State | by not jess than twenty-five thousand major- vy. {nthe central and southwestern portions ot the State it seems to be conceded that the Tomocracy will make heavy gains according to "he present look. In Indians, where a very warm canvass is i progress, the Republicans claim to be daily gurming ground. Among the accessions to the | Kepublican ranks of persons of political note, | j | who for the last two or three years have been | sung with the Democratic party, are General ‘Taos. N. Stiliweil, Hon. David Kilgore, Hon. Atired Kilgore, Garland D. Rose, of Indianap- - R. H. Hudson, of Terre Haute; Gen. se. Hon. John Purdue, W. BR. Ellis, Esq., Col. Gavin, and others. The Republicans ar- je that if, without the aid of the conservative Republicans, they carried Indiana by four- (een thousand majority, they have now the certaifity, when thoroughly united, of car- Tying the State by a large majority. The city election at New Albany, where the Kepublicans made a gain of 700 votes, is also | looked upon by them as an unmistakable indi- | cation of the direction the political current has taken in Indiana, The Democrats. on the other hand, take comfort from their unmistakably rge meeting st Columbus, Indiana, as an in- dicstion that the people are with them. From the generally conceded fact that Seymour must carry Indiana to be elected, it is certain that every inch of ground in that State will be | thoroughly canvassed. in Ubio, the canvass is openmg with mach animation, and as that State is blessed with an Bousual proportion of fluent speakers of both parties, the people are likely to be pretty well talked to for the coming month. Both parties are sanguine of success. In Missouri, the contest is waged with great | Sctimony and & surplusage of personalities. In several of the Congressional Lnstriots each party bas asort of Kilkenny cat-fight im its own ranks, tending to involve the combatants im so much smoke that it is not quite easy to | see who of them are having the best of the fight aig eS GaoaeRTOWN asp HER Proroszp Ratt. | ROAD.—The City Pathers of Georgetown seem to be alive to the necessities of our District | cities, and their town particularly, on the sub- yectof a railroad connection. A called meeting of the Councils will be held to-morrow evening, we understand, to recerve the report of the special committee concerning their interview with the directors of Loudon and Hampshire railroad on last Monday, and to consider this important subject in all its bearings. 1f what we hear be true, and we have it from most reliable authority, the greatest impediment to the speedy contruction of this railroad connec. tom may be considered as entirely removed: that is, the difficulty of procuring & direct and €conomical means of transit across the Poto- mac. Hy the authority obtained from Con- gress the lessees of the Alexandria aqueduct are permitted to build across their piers a rail. Toad bridge; and with this view, in rebuilding that structure, the trunk Was placed far enough down the stream from its original bed to allow room for the construction of a doable railrogd track om its west or upper side. It is the purpose of the lessees whenever arrange- tents shall have been made to connect George- town with the railroads of Virginia to have such a railroad bridge built, over which (ac- cording to the terms of the act of Uongress) ‘they wil! grant perpetual rights of transit to 35 many Companies as may be willing to ac- cede to the payment of the reasonable rate of toll op passengers and freight, prescribed by taw. The lessees, it is stated, are willing and Anxious to build this bridge and only wait the motion of the people of Georgetown to go to work Tue Ertscorat Geymgat Coyvertion.— ‘The Apiscopahan and several other of the or- gans of its Church are beginning to specniate ‘Ss to the course of their approaching General Convennon. Three courses, it says, are open to that triennial gathering of the represenia- taves of theentire denommation, viz: “Either to decide positively against the repeal of the dis- puted and obnoxious Tyng canon, and refuse to revise the Liturgy and expurgate or explain the expressions which teach baptismal regen. eration and 1ts related doctrines or to decide in favor of the petitions of the Low Churchmen: and do both; or ignore the whole matter, de- cide nothing, and go on as before. It says, however, \hat either of the former courses will be unsatisfactory to the party thus treated, and the last course will be unsatisfactory to all.” ‘The Fpiscopalian is constrained not to trust in the Convention, but im God alone. It is known that petitions are in circulation, and others are Promised st the eleventh hour, for the action ot the General Convention in regard to certain matters in dispute. The Churchman of Connac- ticut thinks all difficulties will besettied har- moniously, but the Episcopalian says there are vitally important differences among the teach. ers and members in regard to the faith: and adds: “There can be no peace, n0 coalition. There may be, and is, toleration. That is no more than all have had to the extent of license- Sut the parties in our Church holding radical- ly different views of the doctrines of the Gos- Pel, of the Sacrameut and of the ministry can- not cease to express that difference, diverge more and more widely, and approgch their op. Posite to goals.” es Tae Conpition oF Fraycr.—Two years ago the thinkers in Pari general drift of things in that remarkable cour try, asked Napoleon for a commission to in- quire into the state of agriculture and the con- dition of rural France. The empire was belted off to thirty strips and questions put to hun. dreds of intelligent persons in every part of the country. The tacts developed are by ne means cheerful. France is growing poorer sud weaker year by year. Paris sucks in all the vigor, all the enterprise, all the pith, and hope, and besuty of the land. Men will not stay in the country to Isbor for a franca day when in Paris they can get five. The rurai Frenchman |s determined not to have children, and the deaths are more numerous than the births. Great numbers of the young men are less than five feetthree. Nobody will joan the tarmer money with which w drain lands or buy manure. A passion for gay living and for Paris bas penetrated the masses. The future is gloomy for la lelie France. The python cen- traltzation bas begun tostrangleher. Herrural system is fundamentally vicious. The artificial ts overshadewing the natural. The splendid city, 80 great, So sparkling, and deboamr, is killing all the land. From the publishers, the Miami Printingand Publishing Company, Cinninnati, we have «The Democratic Speaker's Hand-book,” com. piled by Mathew Corey, jr, and which is an- ounced as “ containing everything necessary po the defense of the Naticpal Democracy in the coming Presidential campaign, and for the assault of the Radical enemies of the country and its Constitution.” If it does all this it must be just the book Democratic speakers are baakering alter. eveming. why | Alexandria newspapers of Monday mor: | Fairfax county in 1757 | {he north and northeast, for about forty miles, TRE ALEXANDRIA MAILS.—To Uol. Lovvor County, Vincinta.—In view of the ‘gotiations in progress for connecting the Loudon amd Hampshire raslroad with the Dis- | trict cities, by a branch railroad, the following information in relation to the fertile coun through which that road passes compile from a circular issued b Fos- ter & Henderson, land agents at Leesburg, may be of interest to our readers: Loudon county, rginia, was iaid off from And it is bounded on by the Potomac river: on the east aye fairfax county; on the south by Prince Wikiam and Fauguler, and on the west by Clarke county, ginia, and Jeffercon county, West Virginia, when meets on the top ef the Blue Ridge Mountains. ‘The eastern line is abeut twenty two miles from Washington, and its western line about fifty-five miles. It is traversed by numerous mill streams, having on them fine mill sites. and many fine mills. There is a turnpike from Washington and another from Alexandria, meeting at Dranesville, (fourteen miles from Leesburg.) and thence exteadin through Leesburg, the county seat, to the top of the Blue Ridge near Snickersville. There is Another turnpike from Alexandria to Aldie twelve miles south of Leesburg); at Aldie it ranches, one fork leading off wo Middleburg, | in Loudon, and thence to Rector’s Cross Reads, \U pperville, and Paris, in the edge of Fauquier county, and thence through Millwood to chester; while the other fork P pes through Mountsyille, Philomont, and ickersville to Berryville, in Clarke, and theuce to Winches- | ter. The Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire railroad is located to Hillsborough, and graded to Hamilton. but the cars, at present, rua only to Leesburg, trom Alexandria, a distance of thirty-seven miles. Hamilton is six and Hills- borough twelve miles from Leesburg. There is a charter for a TE from Leesburg to Aldie, and also burg to the Point of | Rocks; it is possible that within a year both will be under way. The Manassas Gap road is distant twelve miles from Aldie, uine miles from. Middleburg, and about seven miles from Paris, at stations respectively thirty-six, forty- eight, and fifty-five miles from Alexandria, Between the B & O. and M. L. & H. railroad runs, extend from the Po- tomac to the Prince Wiiliam line, and lie be- tween Fairfax county and Goose Creek, until its meets the Negro Bountain, the latter being the boundary to the Prince William line. They are watered by Broad Run, Horsepen, Su; land, Beaverdam, and their tributaries, an by } Bull "Run, which is the boundary of Loudon | and Prince William. All these streams have mill seats on them, and on Goose Creek some of them are very fine. The routes to the mar- ket are the canal, two turnpikes, and the rail- road, whose stations are Herndon, in Fairfax, Cerne» Farmwell, and Belmont, in Loudon, ant from Alexandria respectively 24, 26. 31, - id 33 miles, and the furthest one only 1$ miles from Leesburg, the county seat. The lands are Ted shale, generally the rock lies deep; there are extensive beds near the railroad, at Bel- mont, of guiess, from which Goose Creek and other bridge abutments are built. The lands range from $10 to $4) per acre, according to quality of improvements and the soil. Man. Rorthern men are settled along the Fuilroad. The lands produce abundantly of wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, and truits, and the blue grass pastures are unsury any where. District No. 8is the one in which Leesburg, the county seat, is situated, and is partially bounded ‘by the Potomac ‘river and Goose Creek, which latter separates it from districts 10, Land 2; its western boundary is the Cotoc- ton range. There sre four merchant mills in the Leesburg district, and as many country mills, and several good water powers, unim- proved at present.
