After returning thanks for the bonor shown Bim, ‘and regretting the elim Attendance at the meeting, Bounced that General Crit! house, and hoped he would favor the club with remarks. (eneral Crittenden responded im @ speech of about forty minutes’ length, in the course of which he reviewed the and practice of the Democratic party, and ar- that the two were entirely inconsistent. The Soldiers’ Con vention at Chicago was con- trasied with the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Con ven- tion beld at New Yors during the sitting of the National Democratic Convention. The first, he said, was one of the most important bodies ever assembied, because its feelings aad objects were in unison with the great Republican party, and the Repablicin nommating Coaven- ton endorsed it: while the Conservative Dem- oeratic Soldiers’ Convention at New York was not at the New York Convention. He thought the (Democratic party & humbug, and the candidates a traud. Its platform was a sham, and the party made up of 4 heterogeneous collection of all parties, Some were Democrats because they bad been raised as such, it was ua their heart; aud on the other hend others were Democrats for the sake of office, and were made such by President Johnson. He had Some respect for the consistency of an out-and- out Democrat, but for those Democrats of the School he had none. President Johnson had been a Republican, but since the death of Mr. Lincoln he had come out for the Demoerat- ic party, and if, im bis nominations to the Sen- ate, he had recommended staunch Democrats, of Standing and principle, it would have been as well in the Senate to have confirmed them; but wherever a square, acknowledged Repub- ican was recommended, the Seuate should have made the most rigid inquiries how he ob- tained bis nomination. He contended that the secessionists comprised the larger portion of the National Democratic Convention All the elements of disunion and faction met at that Convention upon one common groand, each determined to make the most of the situation, and console themselves with the axiom that in Politics “fair is toul, and foul is fair.” The Platform of the National Democratic Conven- ton was read by sections, and criticised. That portion in which the speedy admission unto the Union of all the States 1s recommended was pronounced inconsistent with the subse- quent action of the Democrats in Congress; for, notwithstanding the platform claims immedi- Ate Testoration of the Southern States, yet when the question came up in Congress a short While after the adjournment of the Convea- tion, on the question of admitting the Ala- bama members, the Democrats bitterly opposed it, andentered a protest against thelr udimis- sion. Chief Justice Chase’s course was com- mented on, and his view on the currency ques- tion pronounced to be what migh* pe expected. He (Chase) bad shown himseli tz be composed of a good deal of gum elastic. After com- Fleting his review of the Democratic platform, which he pronounced a conglomeration of ¢lap-trap, the speaker read a platform of his Own composition, which he thought shouid have been adopted, asit reilected the true prine ciples of the members which eemposed the Convention. The reading of the plat- form excited great laughi-r and ay ase. The resolutions were, in subs: That treason never was, is not uow, and never shall be odicws to the Conservative Democra- ey. That practical repudiation, in some form, of the national cebt created in and by ar. un- holy war, is essential to the perpetuity of the Conservative Democratic party. Political equality (especially of negroes) is foreign to our principles, and will ever be resisted by the Conservative Democracy at least until a ma- jority of the negroes, controlled by their former owners, learm to vote for our measures and our men. The Con-ervative Democracy never did glory in nor sympathize with tue invasion and subjugation of heir Southern brethren, and they hereby pledge themselves never to nominate or support Lincoiu hirelings for office save and except as a mere matter of party policy sud expediency. It is the true Policy of our party to foster and supp: 1 Tings, so that the corruption nece=sari herent in politics may mure to the Con tive Democracy exclusively. lu Johnson we joyfully recognize a u strument of our party, and waile we him merited praise for favors and future, yet we are uuwillimg to pay there- past for so bigh a price as 4 nomination by thi convention. justly img that as he be. trayed both of his parties in the past, he mivht. if elected, go back on us agai and we cordially invite Chief Jaszice Chase and other Sore-headed office-seedin.
