We know thatas clerks at Wasbing- tom they are far less useful than men. Their | habits of work are much lexs accurate, and they do not give their minds to their duties with the same eonscientiousness and fidelity. The reason is the same as that given | by our Old Bachelor. They do not teel that | ese duties are the business of their life, and that their whole success or failure depends upon | t Whatever they do, love, matrimony, and the care of @ house of their own, are aiways at the bovom of their thoughts.”” We are surprised to find this shallow stuffin the intelligent celumns of the Sun. It is a spectiren, however. of a great deal of the non- sense written in regard to women and their unfitness for any occupation or business in Ite beyond that of hunting for husbands. The Sun need go no farther than the Cooper [nsti- tute School of Design, of its own city, to learn that females have the capacity for accurate, conscientious work. We have before us spec! mens ot the work of some of the female gradu- ates of that School, in the shape of illusira- tious to a New York book on Banks and Bank- aug. that for spirit and truthfulness of drawing surpass anything we have Iately seen from apy artist of the male persuasion. It may pos- sibly be that women may fail om certain quali- ties of firmness and steadiness of touch requi- site for engrayers, but we much doubt it. As regards clerkly work the Sun's informa- tion is certainly at fault. We believe that it is | the testimony of all Heads of Bureaus where jemales have been employed, that they perform their duties quite as satisfactorily as male clerks; and im certain work requiring neat- bess and celerity, as im handling postal cut rency. they are decidedly superior. They may be keeping wp a tremendous thinking ail the while about matrimony and the house- keeping arrangements, but to all outward ap- Pearanees they are quite ss much in earnest in | their work as the male clerks, who, accord- ing to the Sem, are bringing their masculine powers of concentration to bear upon the Problems of success and failure in life. Suppose the Sun writer puts the matter to the test of experiment. Let him drop in at the pearest plece—the Custom House, City Hall, Of ANY private business establishment where a specimen of the restless male anima! confronts 8n office desk. Quite possibly he will find Lf superior article -* male clérk giving nis mind to bis duties, and bringing tbe masculine pressure to bear upon the business of life some- Usteg a8 follows. He (male clerk) works a few minutes pretty sharply, then he winds his watch, examines his watch to see how it ticks, Tubs @ dim spot om the case, measures the tick Sgain, is dissatisfied with the tick, shakes the watch gently, verifies his dissatisfaction with the tick, takes it across the street to the watch- meker, resumes his desk and the serious busi- ness of life, finds the serious business of life rather wearing, collapses upon the small of bis back and rests his weary lower limbs upon the moulding of his desk, discovers that his feet areasieep, goes out to restore the circula- ‘on, resumes bis desk and the serious business of life, yawns, wonders if it is lunch time, sues out to “see a man,” resumes his desk and tue serious business of life, makes sundry rev- otutions on bis office chatr to see if the rotary principte is all tight, reverses the motion, dis- cusses base-ball problems and the political sit- vation with superior artucle male clerk No. 2, Sad soon, waril the close of office hours affords &n opportunity for billiard or base-ball recu- peration for bis overtasked energies. Ot course it would not be fair to say that this 1s the manner im which all male clerics always epead their time, but the Sun writer will doubtless find, by personal inspection of this sort, that there are two sides to this question of the anferiority of female clerks in the way of close conscientious application to work. ‘The Metropolitan street railroad of this city ha: declared another dividend, we see, and in fact bas for some time been paying good divi- dends regularly. We are glad to notice this fact, as an illustration of what pluck andenergy ou the part of some of our busipess men have accomplished under unpromising circum- stances, There is no rush of travel on this line leading to large receipts: and many have doubted whether the road could be made to Pay. especially as the managers have catered very liberally for the accommodation of the public in the way ef handsome, comfortable cars, 80 exceslent track, and capable em. ployees. By excellent management, and the | eduction of various economical and Iabor- saving improvements, including the box sys- teas of receiving the fares, the road us now placed upon a firm paying basis, withasteadily sucTeasing basis. All this isa matter of con- gratulation and encouragement to usas citizens | of Washington, since the road is owned and | managed entirely by Washingtonians.
