John Toom- fon teacher, was examined yesterday afternoon by Messrs. Wilson, Brown, Tustin, and Wood- Sard, with Alderman Richards and Professors Spencer and Cady, in the presence of a large number of parents and frieuds and other teachers. The building in which this school is Jocated 18 a two-story brick, and well suited for sehool purpores, the roous being large and Well venUlated, and neatly farnished with the Bosion school desks. The exsmiuation yester- day was very creditable to ‘eacher and pupils. In grammai they wer thoroughly examined im analysis and parsing by Mr. Wilson, and answered all questions accurately. In pen- mansbip they cannot be excelled by any boys’ school im the city. and the examination im that branch and book-keeping, which Was conducied by Professor Spencer, elicited great praise from all present. In geography they and arithmetic, mental and practical showed great advancement, but in reading ahey lacked that expression which is neces- sary. and wéich is found in several other of Public schools of the city. As a general ‘thing the examination throughout was ver, y good, Mr. Thomson being one of the oldest and Most faithiul teachers in the city. At the close & gold medal, presented by a friend of the school, was awsrded to Master W. J. Drink- ard, be being the most meritorious pupil of the schosl. Master Brunner, on behalf of the pupils, presented the teacher with Tenayson's Poems, aud another scholar with 2 gift of perfumery. The trustees referred to the fact that the corporation and trustees were too poor to fird premiums, and yet the teacher, who had had so much trouble 48 obiaining her money, had found means to Provide premiums for the most deserving Pupils. Third District—The examination of Miss Lizzie Hinton’s Secondary school, No. 6, for girls, took piace on Monday afternoon a: the school-house, corner of A and 3d streets, Capi- tol Hill. There were present fifty-five schol- ars, a large number of the parents, Messrs. Walsh, Jobneon, snd Marks, trustees; Messrs. Holmead, Clark, and Ellis. ex-trustees: Alder- man Gulick, Mr. West, of the Treasury De- partment, and others. The exercises began at 2% O'clock and lasted tit half-past six, during which the classés were kept constantly at work im the various branches usually taught in schools of this grade. The children acquitted themselves generally in a creditable manner, and by their promptness, perfect discipline, ‘2nd distinct articulation, gave indisputable evidence of the unrelaxing earnestness with which their teacher had applied her faculties tor their educational and moral advancement. in geography, reading, punctuation, and wri- ting, the scholars, with few exceptions, sed the examination as well as many of a higher class; while im the use of capitals, dictation, and arithmetic, both mental and practical, there could be no fault found. Miss Hinton had many disadvantages to encounter in the management of ber school, and her suc- cess in overcoming Sem lly cosabliches ber reputation as a young lady qualified tor the vocation which she has adopted. At the close of the examination appropriate remarks ‘were made by Dr. W: Messts. Hol- mead, W. T. Johnson, Ellis, and West, | all of whom expressed es highly grat- ified with what they had witnessed and pre- dicted am enviable future, both for the teacher andscholars. Mr. Holmead claimed special credit for baying introduced Miss Hinton as a teacher inthe Third District; for, had it not ‘een for his persussion she never would have been im the profession. He was proud of her, And felt a peculiar gratitude for the manner in which she had {ulfiiled his expectations. Be- fore dismissing her scholars, Miss H gave no- tice that this moruing she would announce abe premiums for the session, when she hoped they would all be present, Fourth District.—Male Intermediate School ‘was examined by Mr. W. J. Stephenson and Jobn E Thompson, in place of Mr. Cassell. @ juror was absent. On roll 46, 520 transferred at the beginuing of the year. Miss Geneva Reed is the teacher, and ber school showed assidious attention to the duties of the year. The Eaglish Grammar classes were equal to some we have met in the Grammar Sebools. The geography was quite excellent. The pupils exhibited great ess mm working difficult examples in common and Cecimal fractions, such as todivide 3% by 195 and give the proof. The spelling was also up to the grade of the school, indeed among the best. W. Mills, of the Sth precinct, charged with committing an assault with a razor on William Underwood. The accused was taken before Justice D. R. Smith for examination.who com- mitted bim to jail in default of bail for a further hearing. Underwood is an attendant to one of Mr. . Fowler's iee wagons, and it appears that while serving one of his customers on Capitol Hill with ice yesterday morning the accused went to the wagon and took a piece of ice and walked off with it. Underwood fol- lowed him and demanded pay for it, where- upon Brooker ran into @ barber shop near by, and procured a razor under prentence of want- ing it for the purpose of shayinga man. He then returned to the wagon and inflicted a s@vere wound across Underwood's right arm, between the wrist aud elbow, and another across his hip, whereupon officer Mills, of the Sth precinct, and the wounded man chased him from Capitol Hill to the corner of 41 street and Pennsylvania avenue, wheu he succeeded in making his Sal juentiy he was traced to Kendall Green and there arrested by officer Mills.
