THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation im the District. CROSBY S. NOYES. ++-Editer. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY.............. JUNE 3, 1568, G7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- @BAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. OREGON ELECTION. Democratic Success. Private dispatches received in this city to- day from Democratic sources, in Oregon, state that the election in that State on Monday | resulted in the success of the Democrats by & majority of 1,200; a Democratic gain of some 1,500 over the last election, in IS66, when the majority of Woods, Republican, for Governor, was 27. Se eee A Word oF Cavtiox —The deplorable hom- icide last night, and other collisions between ‘white and colored, ‘nearly resulting in loss of lif, should warn all good citizens to unite in allaying the hevted party feeling now existing, | And in sternly frowning down the spirit cf Iswiessness that slwas crops out during such periods of excitement. This city has for many years had an enviable reputation for law and order, and this reputa- tion must not be lost. We do not now propose to apportion the responsibility for the late disturbances; but both parties must take their sbare of it. In the homicide last night, the colored man seems, from the evidence, to bave been acting on the defensive; but in the attack upon young Hend- Jey laet night, and upon the old man Adams on Friday night by colored men, there seems to baye been no provocation by the injured parties, they having been attacked at random by their excited assailants, who had received some abuse from the crowd on the sidewalks, Good citizens of ail parties should feel it their duty to aid in checking the spirit of aggression and retaliation which the turbulent, rowdy elements in our midst show themselves so ready to indulge in. Tue Marytasp Democratic Conven- TrIo¥.—This Convention meets in Baltimore to. day, and the partisans of the different candi- daies for the honor of representing Maryland in the Democratic National Convention at New York were canvassing actively last night. ‘The Democratic politicians connected with the Custom House, Revenue Department, and Post Uflice, strongly favor sending Mr. Montgomery Bisir to the Convention asa Senatorial dele- gate. Mr. Blair is warmly opposed to Pendle- tom, and 1s in favor of Hancock, though rumor says he will canvass the chances for the nomi thom of his brother, Gen. Frank Blair, as a good available military candidate. State Treasurer | © Fowler, also a Hancock man, is favored by the Baltimore Democratic officials as a delegate. ‘The American of this morning says: It was understood that Judge Carmichae! and George R. Dennis—supposed to be frieads of Pendleton—were to be sent from the Eastern Shore, and that the Johnson-Hancock men were wilhag to divide the delegation The friends of Mr. Pendleton seemed to be somewhat paralyzed at the fact that many of | the old «wheel-horse’ pohcy of a war the even: Archer a ‘were — closeted It was bene ag that the first named three ere favorable to the Blair com; and Mr. pee to it. name of pay Er and then only withasmile, What change may take place to-day cannot be foreseen, but it locked last night as if the astute management of the officeholders, led by Mr. Blair would | manage to suppress’ the Pendleton enthusiasm ef the Demoeracy of the State under the wet Dianket of expediency.” pam Scena eee The Old School and the New Sehool Presby- teriam General Assemblies have both agreed to Secept the plan of reunion which has been under discussion in those bodies respectively for the past few days, and to submit it to the approval of the Presbyteries throughout the United States. There seems to be but little oubt that this approval will be almost unan- imously given, as the great mass of the denom- ination are m favor of healing the existing breach between its two principal divisions. ‘Whether the smaller bodies, such as the Re- formed and the United Presbyterians, will also concur im the movement, is less certain; but even if they should decline to do so, the con- solidation which will be effected will still be of importance. a en The Second Baptist Church of Newport, Rbode Island, notwithstanding the recent reso- fution of the Rhode Island Baptist Convention that ministers and churches admitung persons to communion who had not been immersed could not be recognized as Baptists, still ad- heres to the practice of giving general invita- tion toall Christians to their communion table, and of receiving members of other denomina- tions, Episcopalians, Moravians, Methodisis, and others with perfect cordiality. Tne Sua @ay after the resolution of the Convention the same invitation was given, without any notice of the proclamation. The Rey. Charles Mal- eolm, son of Dr. Howard Malcolm, is the pas- tor. On Monday the June clause in the Bank- Tuptey law. by which debtors are prevented trom taking the benefit of the act voluntarily unless by paying into court fifty cents on every dollar of the mdebtedness, came into operation Notwithstanding this, peWtions are still filed in the usual way, the parties ranning the risk of the conte and the opinion of the court a: to the legality of the proceedings. The Methodist General Conference hat passed the ball changing the basis of the conference so ‘@ to.admit a proportion of laymen. The pro- portion is not large, especially in the General Conference. In connection with this measure the Conference has extended the suffrage to women, or at least authorized the general prac- (ee im the Church of female suffrage. pesca dieearessnausteebann ins Chiet Justice Chase bas arrived at Rich- Mond, where he will remain until after the ‘rial of some important cases before the United States Circuit Ceurt.
