THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirenlation in the District. CROSBY S. NOYES..........Editer. WASHINGTON | pe H THURSDAY. 868. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELB- RAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ANOTHER ACTIN THE PEACE COMEDY ‘The great powers of Europe, each one jeal- ‘ous of the other, and all eagerly engaged in the work of strengthening their defences, manu- | tscturing improved fire arms, experimenting im murderous weapons, and bringing their | best talent to bear on military and naval prob- | Jems, still persist in their professions of a de- | sire for peace, and every week or two we hear | something of armies reduced, propositions for | a disarmament, &c., &c., which all turn out to | amount to just nothing at all, so far as the pre- | | | servation of peace is concerned. By such an- ouncements no one is deceived. and itis rather singular that they should be made so systema! ically and persistently. It is true, no doubt, ‘that England, Austria and Prussia, as wells other European uations, have grown weary of the excessive armaments, and that they would gladly reduce them if they could. Bat so long | ‘Bs they are so jealous of each other, and afraid of each other, pothing can come of their good | astentions except wars and bankruptcy. | The curtain has just raised upon the latest | act im the farce. The cable brings us news of nother proposition for a general disarmament. | ‘This time it is England that takes the initia. | tive, and the proposition is made to Austria in the first place. This is especially suggestive, | jm view of the fact that the English Budget for the rext fimancial year contains increased appropriations for the Navy, whilp the nsw Austrian Conscription Law, recently adopted, is modeled upon the Prussian and French sys- tems, and is ingeniously contrived so as to | make a soldier of every able-bodied man in the Empire. We have the report from Prussia of ® movement in the same direction. It appears that the King bas ordered a reduction of the | Landwehr or militia on this year's conscrip- ton. This reduction does not amount to much, lly as the best engineering talent of | is now engaged in strengthening the defences ot the kingdom so as to render one man equal to a number of assailants. Tue Potomac FIsHERIEs.—The run of shad in the Potomac this season has been very light. owing partly to the backwardness of the sea- | ‘Sen and the freshets, but in a greater measure to the destructive methods of fishing with long seines, gill-nets, &e., which are killing off the fish. In the olden times thousands of shad ‘were caught at a single haul of the short sein more than are now caught in a week's fishing | with the lorg seines. It has been said that fishermen make as much money at the high prices now as they did then, with more fish and low prices. That is not eo. Fortunes were made im those days at the fisheries, but now al- most ss much money is sunk in a fishery in one season &s can be lost in the same ume in | establishing a newspaper. The fishing grows worse each year, and will continue to d@soun- til the fishermen cense to catch all the shad entering the river, and allow a portion to reach ihe upper waters of the Potomac to spawn, or | uptl they take measures to breed them artifie:- | ally. 1 The Democratic State Convention of Massa- chusetts did not, as reported, pass a resolution favoring Mr. Pendleton, and the Pendleton stock must be discounted to that extent. From what we can hear of the county meet- ings in Maryland to send delegates to the Bal- timore Conservative State Convention, there is quite a disposition in that State to put forward Ex-President Frank Pierce for the Presidency. and Mr. Pendleten for the Vice Presidency as the first choice of the State: and Mr. Pendleton tor the Presidency as the second choice. But for Mr. Reverdy Sobnson’s vote on reconstruc- tion, be would undoubtedly be put forward by the Conrervatives of Maryland as their candi- | date for the Presidency. As one of the last of the great statesmen of the old school, most Marylanders feel that Mr. Jobnson would fill the first place in the nation with unsurpassed dignity and ability; but the feeling against him jor that one vote seems quite as bitter as when it defeated bis re-election to the United States Senate. | A Curck To Prize Fiewtrxe.—It really begins to look as if the authorities throughout ihe country are in earnest in their efforts to put & stop to those disgusting exhibitions of brute strength and endurance known as prize-fights. | We bave heretofore reported oneor two matches | Which have come to an untimely end in conse- | quence of the interposition of the military or civil authority, and now add another to the list The McCoole and Coburn prize fight, which was to have taken place yesterday in | Indiana, was broken up by the interference of the State authorities. _McCoole was arrested in | the morning and put under bonds, and Coburn | Was subsequently arrested as he was entering the ring. The fight is probably off. The latest | indications from Indiana are to that effect. McCovle appeared and demanded the stakes, ‘t is reported. An impromptu fight between | Potsy Sheppard and Mike Coburn was broken | up by the roughs. a The plan tor the reunion of the Old and New Schdpl branches of the Presbyterian Uhurch, which has been in preparation for more than a | Far past, seems not likely to be adepted with. | 16" out moredebate and discussion. It is now up tor ratisieation before the Old School General Assembly at Albany, and the New School Gen- eral Assembly at Harrisburg, but in both bod- irs itemeoubtérs serious opposition. Dr. Breck- enridge, 410g the Old School divines, has made lougsperch against it; and Dr. Patter- son, of the New School, is likewise disaffected. ‘The result will be looked for with great inter- est by the teqters of all denominations.
