There is a lull in the impeachment ex. citement, partly from the, itipression that Ane question will not be taken to-morrow. Same of the Mauagers favor postponement, while ‘others, it is known, are im favor of disposing for once an¢ for all a question that is now ohly terving to weaken and distract the Republican party. Some leading Republicans believe that it will be policy to get wholty rid of the im. Peachment matter asa feature of the coming Presidential canvass, and to move on to “fresh Gelds and pastures new,” where all waining under the Republican standard can rally on common issues. The Chicago Convention be- gins to overshadow the topic of impeachment. ‘The great topic of interest is the question of the Vice Presidency. Will the failure to convict the President attract sufficient sym- pathy for Mr. Wade to make hin the candi- date for Vice President? or will the contest between the Western candidates Yor the po- sition result in a compromire spon an Rastern man, Curtin, Wilson, or Hamlin? All, the speculation upon the action at Chicago is upon the sssumption of the acquittal of the Presi. dent; for, by a sort of tacit consent to-day sim. peachment bas gone.up.” The next question of interest in connection with the Chicago Convention is thatefa plat. form. Shall there be a pronouneed financial Policy, to take the wind out of the sails of the supposed-to-be popular Pendletonian green- back policy! Shall the financial resolution of the platform be couched in some vague gen ralities that may mean anything or nothin, or shall the party fight it oat on the line of sus- taining the National faith and credit? The question of a financial policy and a tariff policy are the only ones likely to make much division in the arrangement of a platform at Chicago; and the Republicans felicitate themselves that their opponents will not only have the same questions to deal with, but also the more knottly one of uniting the Peace Democrats and the War Democrats in a work- ing team, The question of universal suffrage will doubtless be raised, but it is probable that it will be dealt with by a resolution recommend. ing toeach State the adoption of an amend- men’ ‘o the Constitution providing for accord. ing the rights of citizenship in each State to a citizen of the United States, ‘The reports concerning the examination of witnesses by the Manngers of Impeachment are not altogether correct. They did send for two or three gentlemen and have a talk with them yesterday, but did not examine them as witnesses, and do not propose doing so. To- day they have not held a meeting. They say they have done their duty and will go before the country on the issue already made up, AIMPRovING.—The condition of Senator How- ard is somewhat better to-day, though he is still confined to his bed. His physicians sa. that several days will yet elapse before he cua leave his room. Senator Morton is ont to-day. Senator Conklilg is much better to-da: though not able to leave his bed. He is sa ing trom inflamation of the stomach, though it fs not of a serious character, and bis physician, Dr. Baxter, expresses the opinion that he will son be out again. Senator Grimes is rapidly improving, and to-day was able to sit up. It was at first thought that he was threatened with a para. lytic attack, but he is now recovering, and will be out to-morrow or next day. Ohiet Justice Chase and a number of Senators vis- ited both Senator Conkling and Senator Grimes during the day. SENATOR HENDERSON AND TH® Missovrt DELEGATION.—This morning, Mr. Woodward tried to get before the House as a question of privilege, resolutions for a Committee of Inquiry into the conduct of the Missouri dele- gation in attempting to influence the course of Senator Henderson on Impeachment. Mr. Loan said the interviews with their Senator were had and the letter was written at his in- stigation. The Speaker decided it was uot a privileged question. as the House was not the custodian of the honor of the S-nate, nor com- petent to take notice of infringements of its privileges. The House then proceeded to the consideration of private bills, For CuicaGo.—Gen. Stickies. chairman of the New York delegation; Mr. Chandler chairman of the New Hampelire delegation: and Gen.
