THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cireniation in the District, CROSBY S. NOYES..... .Editer. WASHINGTON CITY: --seeesMAY 7, 1868, S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY Pa SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TEL: GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. Tse Usrar TeacuErs.—The teachers of the Public Schools yesterday held a meeting to devise some mode of redress for their griev- ances in the matter of unpaid salaries, &c. The expression of the meetinz was earnest but dignified and self-respecting, and the action arrived at such as will commend itself to the thévugbttul consideration of the public. The teachers, whose salaries are meager at best, have now come to a pass in consequence of | non-payment of their dues for months, that they must either et rehef or quit teaching and | seek some occupation that will at least give them bread. The narration by some of the fe- | male teachers of the humiliations and trials experienced m enaeavoring unsuccessfally to | bawk their pay certificates about amongst the brokers and money-lenders, was calculated to | enuse humiliation to all citizens present. The | only effectual remedy for these evils, as point- ed out m the Sra lately, is to put the tax for | school purposes ai adequate rate for their | support without resort to the general fund, snd then keep the school fund entirely distinc: | from any other fund. Of course some mode of | present relief must be sought for the teachers before another tax is levied, but the above is | the only mode of putting the school system on | a sound basis. Mzesms. CRAGIN, DRAKE, AND BUCKALEW, the Senate committee appointed to investigate the accounts of John W. Forney, Secretary of | the Senate, from the date of his election to the | present time, yesterday presented a detaiied re- port to the Senate, from which it appears that Je the total sum advanced to hima is 84,125,715.99, which is all satisfactorily accounted for by vouchers duly examined by che committee. A portion of these vouchers haye not yet been yessed upon by the Auditor of the Treasury, but the committee report as the result of their mvestigation that “the Secretary is now a creditor toa small amount, and that no losses bave been sustained by the Government through his action.” Ua the contrary, they state ‘hat “the evidence taken by the committee com- pletely vindicates bim from such imputauon.” Bareway’s Orera Bovrrs.—A large and sashionable audience was present last night at he final performance of the Grand Duchess ef Geroistein, which was presented in the same brilliant style that Yas made the high Feputation of this French Opera Company. “La Belle Helene” is to be given to- night. ‘This opera stands in strong rivalry to the Grand Duchess, both in its effects and in its popularity. It ts of the etme style, but has broader and more positive burlesque purposes, satirizipg with vigor the modern school of s tumental grand opera as eVery where been regarded as a splendid work, and was one of | the first of Ofenbach’s to give him his world- wide fame. Early in the session some one (he could not recollect | whom) called upon him and asked him to give | his opinion under the law of nations of a case similar to that of Alta Vela, He gave his opin- ion verbally, but,not being then im practice as a lawyer, he did not give a verbal opinion. It was not addressed to the President, nor was it put in evidence, and it had nothing todo with the subject of impeachment, and no jonorable man, acting as counsel in the case, ‘ouid have used it to assail the motives of an. other counsel. Mr. Banks (Mass.) was, at his own request, excused from service upon the commitiee ef investigation raised yesterday.
