Couctusion of Yesterdays Proceedings, In Semate yesterday, after our report closed — Mr. Nelson, in f reference to the courne Pursued by Mir. He would not ge back te ‘They were mere technical treason, bribery, crime, and were just as familiar to the Constitution a» they tous. One agers alludes to the fact that” _ if be (Mr. N.) correctly comprebendad the le when the Constitution was “4 framed. treason was a felony punishable by death, bibery was crime pun le by or imprisonment. The word misdemeanor has reference vo ferent thing oer. High crimes meant such as are pun by death. High misde- mear ors aromiodomenners pentehavie by fine or imprisonment, anv not misdemeanor As assanit. We must look to the parliamentary law for in- formation on the subject, and there is no defini. tion there for crimes and misdemeanors; and where these definitions are obtamed, they are from the common law of England and not from the parliamentary law. Hence nothing is im~ peachable under the American law asa crime or misds meanor except such as were defined by the criminal law of England, and Bence be submitted to the Senate that there was great doubt as to whether an impeachment should occur for crimes and misdemeanors not known or mentioned in the Constitution. With this view they deemed it their right to ask, at the hands of the Chief Justice, a yadicial interpre- tation of these facts. ‘The Court adjourned before Mr. Nelson had concluded his argument. The President pro tem. resumed the cbair for legisintive business business. On motion of Mr. Morrill, of Maine, the bili to supply deficiencies in the appropriation for the contingent expenses of the Senate and to detray the expenses of the impeachment trial, as returned by the Honse with amendmont, was taken up. and on motion of Mr. Morrill, the amendments were concurred in. Mr. Trumball, from the Committee on the Judiciary, reported, with amendments, the bill to remove politcal disabilities from Roderick R. Butler, of Tennessee. Adjourned. SHockrne AccrpEnt.—The wife of Mr. Jos. Taylor, residing on Blaff street, in this city, Was preparing some remedy for herown use last Saturday night, being unwell, when a kerosene lamp exploded covering ber with a sheet of flame. which so everpowered her that she sank to the floor nnable to utter an alarm, She was fully dressed, and almost every vee- tige of clothing was burned from her body, Literally burning her to a sickening and de- formed mass. The strangest part is to follow. Her husband offered to assist her, before the or, but she requested him to retire and she would presently join him. He did not go to bed, but reclined on a lounge in an. adjoining room with his clothing on, and a door communicating open. This was at nine o'clock Saturday night. He fell asleep imme- diately, and it is presumed the accident soon occurred. Stupefird by the flame and smoke, she either lay or groped her way about the room until 4:0 the following morning, when she alarme 4 her husband, fled with the dense smok filled both room and had kept him unconscious until there was ‘hing more to burn. Drs. Nichols and Hunt alled, and pronounced her case hopeless. At noon yesterday she was still alive and able to converse. She is an English lady, and is aged fifty years. The floor, where she layand the rugs about the room,’ were burned@and charred, presenting & sickening spectacle of the indescribable torture she must have endured through all the long night. The Iamp was what Js termed a “sun burner,” and she states that it exploded while she stood near, mixing some remedy in a tea-cup.— Wor, IMPORTANT StxGicat OPERATIONS.—Dr. Ellsworth, assisted by Dr. Mayer, performed an interesting surgical operation in Hartford, Friday morning, on A. S. Cowles. It was per- formed tor the purpose of killing a canceroas | affection of the cheek and nose, and consisted in removing almost the whole of the upper jaw on the right side of the face. The surgeons pre- rye the palate plate perfect, and the patient is enabled to masticate his food, swallow and talk in a perfectly natural manner, It was found that the part of the bone affected was soft and spengy. Part of the cheek bone was reserved, and in case Dr. Cowles recovers, as is physicians haye every reason to believe he will (though he is sixty-seven years of age), the only trace of the operation remaining visi ble will be a depressea spot in the cheek. The operation lasted thirty-five minutes, the pa. tent being under the influence of chloroform all the Ume. He awoke perfectly anconscious | that it was 0: Mr. Cowles passed a com- fortable night and im the morning he was quite happy and cheerful. We believe that this is the first time this operation has ever beep per- formed tn this State, and it is seldom done any- where.—Hardford Times, April 1=th.
