The numberof shad and erring which have reached here since our last issue will probably foot up abeut eight theus- and of the former and fourteen thousand of the Jatter, nearly all of which were sold promptly on their arrival todealers at a slight decline from previous report. Shad brought from $16 to $19 per hundred, and herring sold at $10 and S12 per thousand. At the time of the distressing occurrence, Mr. Thomas Padgett was also in the same boat, and States that while fishing, Bartley accidentally fell backwards, upsetting the boat. He (Pad- gett) clung to the boat, while Bartley attempted to swim ashore, but disappeared in the Swash cbannel. A number of sailors from the Nav: Yard went to their rescue, but only suceeded im saying Padgett. After touching at Glymont, the steamer proceeded a= far as Indian Head, and s:arted to return. On the trip up the river, the party stopped at Alexandria, visited the Marshall House, the Old Churct, wherein Washington held 2 pew. and the Masonic Ledge-room, where he so often sat. At6o'clock p. m., the steamer re- turned to this city, the party having enjoyed themselves “hugely” despite the inclemency of the weather. At9 o'clock in theeyening the festivities were continued by a splendid ban- quet, given in honor of the visitors, at the Na- tional Hotel. The banqueting hall was beauti- tully decorated with flags, banners, &c.. with appropriate devices, and the guests, numbering about one hundred, sat down to a bill of fare which, for general excellence, could scarcely be surpassed. After a discussion of the good things of life spread before them, toasts were given and responded to, after which the Knights sung “Auld Lang Syne,” and the ceremonies of the last three days were concluded. It is needless to say that. with the levee on Wednes- day evening, and the excursion and banquet on Thursday, the Knights from abroad have become thoroughly satisfied with the genuine hospitality which characterizes the Knights Templar of Washington city. White. on the charge of being a suspicious character, and having no visible means of support. He was taken to the centre station house, when it was stated by the officer that a lady had pointed him ouf on Pennsylvania avenue as a person who had attempted to rob the pockets of two persons, but, being observed by her, he was thwarted in bis nefarious designs. THE CanaL.—There are but few arrivals of bouts by the canal, and business is not so brisk as ithas been. Navigation on the canal bas been retarted by high water, flooding the tow- path above dam No. 4, eighty-five miles above Georgetown, where the canal and river is one. The water, however, is getting lower, and boats are now able to pass. Several schooners are at the coal wharves, waiting to be loaded with coal.
