THE EVENING STAR. is i Phe largest Cirenaton ta tae Datel | cnctemecion of, Tossentev's CROSBY 5S. NOYES..........Editer. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY .. APRIL 10, 1868, SP READING MATTER ON BVEBY PAGE. SEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. Nonta Caroirsa—The radical party im North Carolina seems to be engaged in feat them on the gubernational ticket. Daniel K. Goodloe (formerly of this city and ‘well-known here,) has been nominated for Governor by the anti-Holden republicans; and the quarrel is growing very acrimonious. A paper called the “Holden Record,” started by HH. Helper, devotes itself to showing up the | antecedents of Mr. Holden as a secession: snd is very personal and bitter in its assaults. ‘The Convention will probably be carried by a considerable majority as the division in the Republican ranks does not extend to that. In Toe New Jersey LecistaTcre, a wo- man's rights petfuon has been presemted and | Teferred to the Judiciary Committee, with in- structions to make an early report upon it. ‘The petition asks for female suffrage; that mar- ried women may make wills of their property. that = widow be entitled to the use for life of the whole of her husband’s real estate; and that she succeed to the ownership of the whole ef his pessonal estate. Orrictat Returns or Connecticut Evec- ‘Tiow.—Im Connecticut the full vote. officially counted, aggregates 99,267, larger by more than 5,000 than ever before. Of this, English re- ceives a majority of 1,731. The State Legisia- ture will probably benine Democrats to twelve Radicals in the Senate, and the House of Repre- sentatives will stand 108 Democrats te 130 Radical members, according to present calcu- lations. Tux PHILADELPHIA MINT Is now prepared to exchange, on demand, one and twe cent bronze and three and five cent nickel copper coins for United States notes, or drafts on Phil- Sdelphia or New York banks, payable in such notes. TeEninG THE TABLES.—It is rathera curious Teversal of things that the secnlar papers are sharply calling the religious weeklies, the New York Independent, Examiner, Church Union, and other papers, to account for publishing inde- | cent advertisements. SF From J. Shillington we have «The Comedy of Convocation in the English hereb,” a smartly written brochure from a * ©atholic stand-point, now exciting consider- able interest in the religious world. SF The Baltimore Chronicie publishes a daily list of marriage licenses issued in that city, giving the names of the applicants for hyme- rial felicity. ‘Tar Week.y Star. now on our counter for sale and in wrappers ready for the mails, con- ‘sins a full account of the Impeachinent trial im the United States Senate; a capital story ot “A Modern Hero: Republican and Demo- cratic Ward Meetings; Reconstruction; Society | New=: Political News: Washington News and People; Use~ 1 Items of Domestic Economy: Humorous sip: the Courts: the Working hes; with Departmental, and Local New Agric hhural and Housekeeping Miscellan he world ada en Tue Worktse Peorte.—The English parts 0: borers are uneasy, and preparations for strikes are making. Those who were receiving more than were reduced from it to 20 per cent., wh: those who received less than @2 were reduced to W per cent, the average reduction about 7 3-1/0 per cent. The strike on the N. Jersey Railroad, between Jersey City and El zabeth, continues, ang the railway compan bringing outsiders in to take the places of strikers. At Wheeling, Va, there is a strike among 8 portion of the iron mill operatives, an advance of $1 Rer ton for their work being asked. At Troy, N. Y., there are several strikes. The stone cutters and shoemakers have both demanded increased pay. In one of the woolen factories at Troy 60) operatives are on a strike for higher wages, but their employers say bus- imess is too dull for them to comply, and they prefer to let their mills remain idle. The strike gf the West Albany workmen has ended, Mr. Torrence.
