It would seem that the dissensions in the Prostestant Episcopal Church, must speedily terminate in a schism if the same monious and intolerant spirit continues to prevail | im the contest. The establishment of the Amer- | icam Church Union on the one side, controlled , by such men a= Drs, Morgan and Dix, and, on the otber, the Declaration of the Evangelical party, signed by such men as Dr. Newton and Tyng, brought the High and the Low Chureh parties into direct antagonism, and later events Dave added intensity to the feelings and deter- minations on either side. Chief among these events is the judicial cen- Sure publicly passedon Rev. S. H. Tyng, Jr., for baving “preached and officiated in a Metho- dist meeting-house,” in disregard of the pro- hibition ef Dr. Stubbs and Dr. Boggs. I: bad been thought possible, that Bishop Potter ‘would administer only a general repr‘.nand, in which case the Low Church part, might have “accepted the situation,” but the Bishop in his zeal went sofar as (o give unpardonable offence | tothe latter. In administering the reprimand he took occasion to praise the impartiality of | the clerical court; charged the respondent! counsel with “leaving no form of appeal to popular prejudice and passion untried,” made atbrust at Mr. Tyng’s father by referring to “erroneous views and wrong impulses, which bave resulted in part from education, and other partial influences”; by implication charged Mr. Tyng with “the rashness so natural to youth and a fiery temper, and narrow views of ‘Christian truth”; assured the respondent that if presbyters “cannot keep far withm the limits of law and order,” thousand times better to turm aside from the ministry of peace, and ex- pend our energies on the obscurest and lowliest mechanical art”; and his superior threateffed the prisoner at his ecclesiastical bar. if the offense was repeated, with “severer measures and mere treublesome proceedings.” ‘The Low Churchmen hold that the attempt | is now being made to crush them and accept the | igeve even sbouid it lead to a disruption of the Church. As one of their speakers lately said, ‘Wesleyaniem was driven off from the jurch, and is now stronger than its mother.” They | ‘will wait to try their strength in the General Convention, next October, and there, as one of their exponents says, “if ritaalism must rule, | they will leave.” Macaulay, in his essay on the Popes, speaks of the wise policy of the Cbarch of Rome, which finds room and seop a mission and a place for all the fiery, zealous, impulsive spirits in its ranks, and never drives away its Loyolas to found new schisms. The piscopal Church of this country may profit by Macaulay's illustration. GeneRat Scuorierp, Commander of the First Military District, has issued an order call- ing attention to the order of April 2d, 1 which suspended all elections for State, Coun- ty and municipal officers in Virginia until the registration prescribed by Congress should be complete. It having been found expedient to continue said suspension, whereby certain elective offices have become vacant by expira- tion of terms of service, and some of the officers whose terms have expired being ineligible for re-election, appointments will be made by the Coromanding General as soon as suitable Persons can be selected to fill all such vacan- | cies. Military Commissioners are directed to report without unnecessary delay the names of All elective officers whose legal terms have ox- pired, stating whether such officers are eligible for re-election, and if meligible they will also forward the names of suitable persons to fill the vacancies. accompanied with eatisfactory evidence of character and qualifications. Po- titions from citizens, registered voters, tor the appointment of any person to office will aleo be | forwarded by the Military Commissioners. All offic: rs will continue to act after the expi- ration of their official terms as required by ex- isting laws until their successors are qualified. Tux Liqvor Law Aorratioy bas extended to England. At present, liquor is allowrd to be sold on Sundays from 1 to3,and,5toil, The Bew bill, therefore, further restricts the time.
