No little interest is felt in Washington in the result of the election in Connecticut. Thecon- test is concededly a close one, and both sides claim & small but sure gain over last year The Democrats have the advantage of being the “ins” and holding the reins of power; but the Republicans appear to be carrying on the fight with rather more vigor than their antago- nists, The Republicans are holding a series of one hundred and fifty mass meetings, and the Democrats have on foot a series of fifty meet- ings. Thus the State will not be lost to either side for want of talk. The principal Republican speakers are Ma- jor General Daniel E. Sickles, Carl Schurz: Senators Wilson and Foster, of Massachusetts and Connecticut; Governor Harriman, of New Hampshire; Governor Gorham, of Calfornia: Governor Haight, of Maine; General W. H. Gibson, of Ohio. To which are opposed, on the Democratic side, as the principal canvass- ers, Senator Doolittle, of Wisconsin; Hon. D. W. Voorhees, of Indians; A. O. Brews! iT, of Boston; Mayor Hoffman and Corporation Coun- sel O'Gormag, of New York. A great deal is claimed for the Grant clubs, of which about fitty have been organized in the State, im the way of fusing both wings of the Republican party into one working whole. As an offset to the efficiency of ti Grant clubs, the Democrats have organized a secret society known as “The Jackson So- ciety,” and clubs, tothe number of from seven- ty-five ora hundred are in active operation throughout the State. The Republicans claim gains in the Bridge- port district, in New London and Norwich, in the Northern manufacturing districts, in Hardord, the place of residence of Mr. Jewell, their candidate. The Democrats claim gains in New Haven, where Governor English resides, ia the western part of the State and slong the Housatonic nver 1NG.—Over work of the mind, conjoined with close confinement Within doors for too longa period daily, will soon undermine the strongest constitution, and make mental and physical wrecks ef individ- als, who would otherwise be brilliant and Strong. After breakfast we go do up cur roctrs, and at a quarter before eight we go to the study room, and there study till nine. The New York £zpress very justly remarks “It is a system of education like this that makes dunces, maniacs and consumptlves.” AN ADMIRABLE method of pra tiom is adopted by the Polytechnic College of Philadelphia. After two years spent in scien- tiff studies, the students are taken fora lei- surely tour of inspection through the min furnaces, mills, works in the Lehigh Valley. They are thus enabled to see tor themselves all the various Processes connected with mining and other in- dustries, and acquire a fund of information that could not be obtained trom books in a life- ume. TAUN GesEnal.—The Bishop of Havana has completely outflanked the Captain General of Cubs. It will be recollected the latter gave orders to send the prelate to Porto Rico by way of punishment for his late offence. The Bishop, however, kept away trom Havana, but asked General Lersandi’s permission to go direct to Madrid. This was peremptorily re- > neds whereupon the Bisbop sent a friend to Key West for the purpose of telegraphing | to Madrid the fact of this refusal. In two days the Royal permission was telegraphed back to the friend to Madrid. General Lersundi is thus left powerless in the premises, and the Bishop bas come back to Havana, where he will embark as soon as he sees fit. It is proba- bie he will go via New Yori.
