Contest Berwrex Lavon axp Carrrar.— A contest has been going on recently between the New York Central railroad through its President, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and the me- @hbanics on the line of the road, which has been ‘watched with much interest by the working- men of that State and of the country. Upon abe accession of Mr. Vanderbilt to the Presi- dency of that road, he commenced retrenching its expenses, discharging a large number ofem- ployees and cutting down wages generally, ‘while increasing the duties of clerks and subor- ordinates. Some time ago he caused the hours Of labor of the mechanics in the machine shops along the line to be reduced to eight hours per day, with a reduction of wages amounting to 20 per cent. Last week the old ten-hours system ‘was restored, but imstead of paying the old ‘wages, the men were tendered but 10 per cent, ‘Advance on the eight hours rate. They refased to take this pay; but the hard terms imposed were insisted upon. Then the men at Albany struck, and, holding a public meeting, made a | ‘Warm protest against this grinding the faces of the poor. Their example has been followed by. the other mechanics in the employ of the Cen- tral, from Buffalo to Albany. All are on a strike. This demonstration, coming at a jnacture when Mr. Vanderbilt has fallen into pretty bad odor, bas compelled him to back down. He telegraphs to the Vice-President of the Central, to return to the ten-hours laborand pay. But | the men who have been so shabbily used are are now hesitating to accept his terms. They have no guarantee that they will not at a mo- ment’s notice, as soon as the present exigency is past, be subjected to another reduction of ‘wages, and perhaps to a general discharge. ‘They sre therefore holding out for better terms. revolved to make the best bargain in their power. vt ‘oming election in this is, next to impeachment, the curr-nt topic of interest in Washington. Among the Repub- dicans who will take part in the canvass during the ensuing two weeks are Senators Harlan, Conweet State | What Wilson, and Thayer, and Representatives | Logan, Garfield. Stokes, Payne, Biaine, Don- nelly, McKee, Coburn, M’Carthy, and Kelley. By invitation of Goy. English, Hon. D. W. | Voorhees of indiana, will leave here to-day to engage in the cany n behalf of the Demo- crats. Invitations bavealso been sent to Sena- ters Dixon and Boolittle, smd Representatives Brooks, Eldridge, Marshall, Boyer, Niblack, Kerr, Hubbard, and others of the same side. The contest is certain to be a very lively one. Tue Assassination PLot. tempt to assassinate President J yhous affair. A number of leading men were Concerned in the plot, and they had secured as accomplices the body-guard of the President and officers of the palace. In one respect ihe conspiracy was modeled after that of ‘he recent at- | ez was ase. | Booth. Juarez was to be shot in his box at the | theatre, and his ministers were to be disposed of by other assass: The discovery of the plot was made only a short time before the hour fixed for its execution, and thus it was frustrated. ALAsKA.—The postponement of the Alaska Appropriation matter until May excites con- siderable comment in diplomatic circles. The action of the committee derives its significance from the fact that, by the terms of the treaty, the purchase money is required to be paid at the Treasury at Washington within ten months from the ratification. As ratifications were ex- changed on the 2th of June last, the ten months expires on the 20th of April, several weeks be- tore the committee even propose to consider the pject.
