Although the events occurring in this city are telegraphed throughout the country, and read | ‘with antversal interest, and by some with deep | aad painful anxiety, yet the financial dis turbances which were expected to result from the attitude of the President, and the action of Congress jooking toward his impeachment, | have not occurred. Gold has been much less | excited than was snticipated, and quotations in New York yesterday ranged from 14% to HR, closing at the lowest figure, notwith- standing the circulation of sensation rumors on Wall street of riots in this city and the procla- mation of martial Iaw, which stories failed to effect the market im the slightest degree. It seems to be understood that the questions at issue are in the course of settlement before the Judicial tribunals of the country, in accordance with existing laws, and that any resort to force ts unnecessary, and would be condemned by moderate men of all parties, who, fortunately for the country, are largely in the majority As some of our dealers in dry goods and other articles bad marked up their stock in antici- pation ofa sudden and material advance in gold, we trust they will promptly reconsider their action, and restore the old prices. They should not add to the prevailing distress by an increase of prices which is uncalled for and anneceesary. If our citizens will only keep cool, and endeavor by all possible means to allay excitement instead of increasing it, it will be better for all concerned. There is no ques- | tuom at iseue which may not be settled Ingally snd quietly, and all beated discussions, but more particularly all panicky meddling with the Inws of trade, are to be deprecated, as they | do no good, but are powerful for ev ‘Tax Prestpent’s Recertios.—The recep- tion at the Exeeutive Mansion listevening was attended by as large and fashionable assem- blage ss any of the preceding ones, although the weather was very inclement. Nowhere is this improvement | more needed than in this city, and particularly on the Avenue I nd we hope to see itadopt- | d bere at once. In this way only, can the un- plem-ant crowdimg on the one band, and the equally unpleasant occupation of two seats by one person on the otber, be prevented. AS TRE FABLED SONG of the swan grows + weeter as death approaches, so the gay season seems to grow gayer the nearer its close. This was aptly illustrated by the hop given at Wil- lard’s last evening.
