A late number of Hall's Journal of Health con- tains, it seems to us, some ideas upon the sub- | ject ofbrain and body Isbor, well worth the consideration of people of large cities, and es- pecially of this city where so large a propor- tion of the population are occupied in seden- | tory mental pursuits. Physiologists after pa- | tient and close inquiry have arrived at the conclusion that the power of the entire man, | bis vitality, is as much expended by two hours | of deep mental efforts as by a whole day of ordinary bodily labor; hence the man who spends four hours in the twenty-four in earnest mental Iabor, gors to the utmost allowable | limit for aday’s work, and all the time that | mains, after deducting ten hours for eating, | sleeping and dressing sheuld be conscientious- | ly expended in muscular exercises, which re- quire no special brain effort, and such exer- cises should always by preference be those which are agreeable, useful and prof- itable, for th not only promote ondition of the body, but give rest to the in, which, by that rest, recuperates its pow- | Many can remember. when turning back to school days, that they have gone to bed feeling that they did not know their lessons, ing in the morning, the mind would m with a gratifying and surprising It is this which accounts for the | jon that persons have striven hard to ber some important fact, or as to where able popers have been laid, and towards rping, when the mind began to awake, le before the body, this being the time jreams, the point is made clear in the | of a dream, thus showing that rest the brain, whether by actual sleep or the sive, comparative rest which manual r affords mental activity, vigor, picactty; from these it follows that no of muscular exercise is ignoble in a stn- in-worker, which has to be done by and by being done by him, will save | oF will save the time of another, who, | perhaps, may already be overtaxed. Feb Uist, | avecompbeet tele THE Poor. * We understand the committee of the Provie dent Aid Society charged with that duty, had yesterday, an interview with General Howard, in regard to the proper course ‘to be pdtsu toward properly relieving the poor of the city, After a full and pleasant interchange of vie it was decided best to close the Te tacos houses on the it of March proximo. Affer that time the Freedmen’s Bureaa will as<ume charge of the freedmen, and the soeiety will en. deavor, as far as its means will permit, to re- lieve the other classes requiring assistance. We understand that it » Gen, Howard's in- tention io use any appropriation made by Con- gress for the relief of the poor under his imme- diate charge for the purpose of providing work for them, and paying for the same at fair rates, rather than to expend it as a purely charitable tund—in the meantime relieving, of course, the Wants of those who, from any cause, are not able to work. This ts the true course, and in adopting it Gen, Howard shows his usual sagacity and good sense, To enable the Provident Aid Society to carry out its undertakings in this arrangement, addi- tional funds are needed, which it is hoped will be supplied without delay, otherwise its opera- tions must be brought to a close at a time when there is still great need for them. Tae Workine Prorte—The New York poor are-hereafter tobe ted at the public ex- pense. The Commissioners of Public Ghari- Ges and Correction in that city haye made ar- rangements to feed them daily between the hours of 7 and 11a m., at three of the New York prisons. All the police authorities are fur- nished with tickets to give to such of the suf- fering poor as they may deem deserving of re— lief, and these measures, it is thought, will re- lieve much of the distress now existing in New York. A convention of mechanics is to be held in Cincinnati, but the time is not yet announc- It is stated that this conyention will take Action upon the present condition of political affairs. In New York, a plan has been broach- ed to receive from all the prominent points of the West qnotations of the labor market, so that emigrants may be sent at once to the points where their services will be most in demand.
