M. SWAIN, The Philadelphis Leder of yesterday con- tains a well written and interesting sketch of | the lite of William M. Swam, one of the founders of that paper. Mr. Swain was born | in Onondago, County, N. Y., and was left an orphan when three years old. At the age of six- ‘en he went to learn the printing business in | Uties, and snch was his industry and energy that he was able at theage of nineteen to buy out the remainder of his term of apprenticeship, | aud go into the world on kis own account. He proceeded to New York, worked awhile as foreman of the New York Sun office; where | from his energy and capacity he became the moving power of the whole concern. In the early part of 186, he felt himself sufficiently ahead im the world to go into business on his Sccount, and taking with him as partners two fellow workmen A.S. Abell and A. H. Sim. | mons, they formed the well known firm of Swarm, Abell and Simmons, in starting the publication of the Philadelphia Ledger. He and bis partners labored most indus- triously early and late, doing the work themselves, writing, reporting, setting the types, working the press, and Mr. Swain even earned around the paper himself m the early days of his enterprise. Subsequently, when the establishment became prosperous and strong, Mr. Swain’s energy and great ability in his Duriness found vent in other directions. He organized express lines for obtaining early news, smd was largely instrumental in making the Hoe printing press and the magnetic wlegray sucere-es im the interest of journalism. Mr. Swain was a man of large and ed inform: on, and of mach more scholarly learning than wes known to any but his most intimate friends. ‘Te all was added an inflexible will, an indomi- table energy, au imperturbable temper, and a sleepless vigilance when engaged in business. ‘The Lecyer truly say at the death of a man of such lows. Sherman be excused from assuming the command. “When the new department ef the Atlantic was suggested to Gen. Sherman, some weeks Ago, he gave some Feasons of a personal char- acter why he would prefer to be permitted to continue his residence in St. Louis, and others involving questions of taste, against being re- quired to take up his residence in Washington Society, thongh it was understood his wife would not be averse to residing in this city. But there is nothing in this movement of the President, nor in the words or conduct of Gen. Sherman,'so faras known in official circles, which Warrant the assumption that any dif. ficulty or controversy can arise between the Executive and the Lieutenant General.
