The offences most frequently complained of are not commit- ted by those sneeringly designated “the rabble,” but by people, from whose genteel dress and general appearance of respectability, we have S right to expect better things. We have, on one or two occasions in this city, seen men ex- Pectorating tobacco juice, and women munch- ing peanuts, in portions of the theatre where we expect only to meet ladies and gentlemen, but such cases, we are happy to state. are not common. The whispering and giggling nui- sance is an intolerable one, which seems to pre- vail all over the country, and to be so firmly established as a national habit as to resist all Written and spoken sermons and satires di- Tected to its abatement. There are two other | abuses, however, just gaining a foothold here and elsewhere, which we have more hope of seeing suppressed. . One is the fashion of hur- Tying out before the close of the performance, Which detracts greatly from a thorough enjoy- | ment of the entertainment. This we have seen effectually stopped in some cases by the indig- | nant bisses of those better-bred persons who | for their own pleasurs and the comfort of their | neighbors prefer to remain in their seats until the tall of the curtain. The other bad habit to which we refer, prevails, we are sorry to say, at churches as well as theatres. Modest and Tefined women who have to run the gauntlet of aba from the rudely staring eyes of inl. | bred snobs striking attitudes all along the pas sages of egress from public buildings, well | know the extent and di: ular “lobby nuisance,” very proper! Tur ExGLisH Misstox.—It seems to be gen. | erally supposed to-day, that the appointment as Minister to England, in place of Mr. Adams, resigned, will be tendered to Gen. McClellan, ‘That he will be confirmed by the Senate is doubtiul. It is held by Senators who have a high opinion of the military capabilities of | Gen. McClellan, that he is hardly the man to succeed an admittedly first-class diplomatist | like Mr. Adams, in the present delicate situa. | tion of our relations with Great Britian. Our representative at London should at this junc- | ture be thoroughly versed m diplomacy and | master of the points of international law that cover the important and intricate issues be- | tween the two countries, toenable him success. | fully to maintain the position of this Govern- ment. The resignation of Mr. Adams does not take effect until April, we understand. comfort of this partic- | which the police might | take in hand. Tkatx.—This exuberant egotistical gentle- man seems to be doing an extensive business in Ireland in the way of extensive run-mad speech making, in which it is stated he repre. | sents himeelf as an American politician in the confidence of the American Cabinet, and holds out assurances of material aid from this Gov- ernment to the people of Ireland in case of a conflict with England. PROFESSOR AGASSIZ is to be added to the numb rT of prominent men who have deslaret in favor of making the education of the young more practical than it is—causing it to deal with things rather than words, acts rather than books. Heretofore, it has been considered a matter of course that ap especially smart grada- ate of a school should be sent to college, and thenee be forced inte the crowded ranks of Sspirants for success in the legal, medicol or clerical professions. Therefore, we hate so many peor doctors, lawyers and ministers. ‘The man that might have made a first-rate me- | chanic or farmer is forced intoa pursuit for | which he has no other qualifications than is found in the stimulus of “nothing else than he can Tee Worktxc Prorie.—The Eight-Hour | Fill has passed the California Legislature, and | will probably be signed by the Governor. | ‘Twelve planing mills in Cincinnati are closed. ‘The Montreal Herald notices a decidedly better feeling prevailing in trade in that section.
