It must be in a particularly bad way. When- ever that paper gets in a particularly bad way its bile slops over in the shape of two, or three, or four, or five culumns of muddled rant, in which almost invariably may be found some disereditable attack upon the business of its neighbors. This morning it has a splenetic column headed “The Prosperity of the Inielli- gencer,” im which it essays to show how im- nse is its circulation, “Sunday included,” and how impregnably it is established in the esteem of the people, who, one and all believe that if there ever was a Romanly virtuously con- cted paper, it is the National Intelligencer, nder its present management.” The Mnteili- rimtroduces the following lucid,grammati- metaphorical, and generally remarkable sta ment, designed we suppose, in some occult justrate its text, i. ¢., the prosperity of teltigencer: «Tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of Jscobms thus entrenched in public office con- e fortresses, where the creatures of rotten Kisdicalisim can train their diabolical enginery, sek ‘and hegre aguint coe posta oes es | bravely battling in the oj open field, unsupported | by other means than the weapons of truth, hocks d by whatever of small warnings that are wrested by the tax gatherers to pay an ¢xorbitant interest upon the public debt: a debt beld mainly by shoddy robbers, at the extor- tonate, usurious, and unconscionable rate of forty per cent. off from gold values at date of negotiations of Government securities a by de- uctive rulers, whose sole object was to estab- begro supremacy in the Southern States, © give to it the control of the politics of the re pation.” Now this would really appear to be a pretty vubealtby state of affairs. We are not prepared to comtrovert the statement, because we dont understand it. Doubtless if the Jacobins by | some boeus pocus have been constituted for- » and the rotten Radicals have got inside | Jaccbins, who bave thus been constituted and are training their diabolical | biack, large enginery inside the Jacobins, who bave thus been constituted fortresses, it must tad for the Jacobins. Doubtless the T items of the statement show an equally unpleasant intestinal condition for the parties homed, but we have not been able to muster | breath to mount the Intelligencer's remarkable | elim: With the snfelligencer’s blast upon its own born we find no fault, but we refer | untruthful attack im the same con- | on upon the business of its neighbors | as illustrative of a spirit too common | amongst the newspaper « fraternity It seems to us that the maxim of “Live and live” might be followed in the newspaper bu: ness as well as in any other; but the practi quite otherwise. Instead of co-operating tosus- toim the dignity of the profession and to make it & remunerative one, rather than, it is, the werst paid business going, we find it to be gen- | erally the case that newspaper men aim to un- | derbtid and pull down their fellows; somethi in the same spirit that actuates the ragged street | boy, who, seeing another ragged street boy enjoy- ing a free ride, shouts enviously, “Cut behind At advertising counters it is not uncommon to | bear such phrases hy do you patronize that radical sheet 2 or, “Why do you adver. | tise in that copperhead concern I” or, «Your money will be thrown away in that paper. don’t circulate amongst the respectable cla or, “Nobody will see your advertisement in paper; it has no general circulation.” Now why not say this to the advertiser, every intelligent newspaper man know: is true, why not say to him, goamiss. Your advertisement you many tines over if put in any paper, or ail Asa business man you must necessari adveruse with us, but you will find your money well spent in advertising in all the | papers.” Would not this advice be strictly true, and Would not practice upon it serve to advance | newspaper interests generally ? His fleet is at sists in mixing carburretted hydrogen gas with considerable quantity of pure oxygen gas, and placing in the centre of the flame a small nder of magnesium. The light produced in this manner is said to be sixty times as powerful as that of ordinary gas, A trial of this system was made the other day in Paris, in the square of the Hotel de Ville, while the atmos- phere was dark with snow, by placing the new material in four reverberators. The white light afforded by them was so brilliant that it was easy to read a newspaper on the other side of the river Seine. As well observed by the | Writer of this statement, it may be questioned whether, on account of its excessive intensity, it may not prove injurious to the sight. The evil effects of electric light are well known, and possibly the new system, if universally adopted, may open a new field to medical imterferenee A Youre Recrvit.—A cable dispatch from Paris on Saturday says:—-Young Iturbide, the heir of the late Maximilian, recently enlisted in the Papal Zouayes at Rome.” As “Young Iturbide,” otherwise known as “Maximilian’s " whom we saw on the avenue a few weeks ago, is only about five years old, the | probability is that the Roman question will have been settled some time before he can dfaw his sword in the cause of Pio Nono, even if the Holy Father lives to oppose his enemies until the youngster's beard is grown. Tue District GovERNMENT.—The commit- tee of citizens charged with the duty ot pre- paring a bill or so adapting the bills prepared by Senators Harlan and Morrill for the goy- roment of the District of Columbia as to be acceptable alike to the people of the District and Congress, are by no means idle, as might be inferred from their silence. FETY ON Horse RAILROADS,—A bill is pending in the New York Legislature which requires every railroad company in New York to place safety guards upon the wheels of its horse cars, so as to prevent loss of life in case of aceident. Txe Bostos Transcript says there are two reasons why people feel drowsy in a crowded church, First, because they inhale and thus stroy a large portion of the oxygen of the air—which alone can sustain vitality and healthy action.
