T Helston & Co, and Heiston & Barrett, (amount- ing to $37.4),) for fuel turuished the Oor- porktion; Council resolution appropria- fing $6) for sweeping the market - house; and resolution to lay & flag foutway across Frederick street, on the north side of 2d st-eet, and directing the stieet commissioner to have one putacross Bank alley. The resolution to pay the expenses of the stein fire engine, passed y the Council, was called up, and the items of expenses enumerated in the report were read through. Messrs. Simms and Cropl-y com- pee of the heavy prices which it was al- icged bad been paid for dubbing and horse food, the first equal to the price of butter, and #2) per month for provender for each horse. These cbarges they thought were exorbitant and un- fair, and so far as they were ooncerued the res- olution should not piss. To pay $20 eaca for feeding horses, when the hardest workiag horse could be fed for $15, was wastefulextravagin Qn Motion, the resolution was referred to Standing Committee. Mr. Heiston offered the following preambie and resolution: Whereas a maiority of the Committee repre- senting the interests of this Corporition before Congress have signed a petition for the buteh- ers to procure a charter from Congress, ag inst the wishes of this Corporation, for a marke. house in opposition to ihe Corporation market, and thereby taking (he power granted by the charter out of the hands of this Corporation, and placing it in the hands of a few mon: Th: fore be it Resclved, &c.. That the names of thy parties signing said petition be stricken from the list of that committer, and their vacancy to be filled at once by the two Boards, Mr. Simms objected to the third reading, be- cause he thought it would be doing great injus- tice to a number of intelligent gentlemen who had been delegated by the two Boards to rep: sent the interests ef the Corporstion before Congress. He did not know to whoin the reso- lurien alluded, and bad no wish to know. Mr. ‘Thomas desired to make some remarks on th rubject, butas the third reading had been o5- jected to he would reserve what he had to say till the resolution Was called up on its passag-. Mr. Cropley hoped Mr. Simms would withdraw his obection, as he thought it was but justice to the Corporation of Georgetown, and’ the two Boards Who nominated this committee, to take immediate notice of the unfaithful conduct ot which co d had been guilty, He did not see how any honorable man who had been ap- pointed on a committee, with defined instruc- tions ws to the duty they were expected to form, could act so adversely as these commit- teemen, aimed at in the resolution had done. It Was not high-toued: it was not honorable: and he would get up at twelve o'clock at night to strike from the list the name of any man who would dare be guilty of such misrepresenta- tion. Mr. Heiston defended his resolution. He had heard of six members of the Committee—ail men of respectability—who had used zealous personal influence towards the accomplishment of anact which they had been specially dele- gated to defeat. Mr. Hyde arose to a point of order. The objection to the third reading had killed the resolution for the time being, and, therefore, there was nothing before the meeting Mr. Cropley sid that he won'd put somethii before the meeting, and would not be tal down. He then proceeded to denounce the con- duct of the Committee in_ bitter terms, and reit- erated his appeal to Mr. Simms to withdraw his objection in order that action upon the resolu- tion might be forthwith taken. The Recorder thought the discussion, so far as it had proceed- ed, was in order, Before any call had been made for the third reading of the resolution a member of the Board had made objection, and, therefore, the usual falling off of debate did not follow. Ifthe call for a third reading had been mace before objection was made then the case would have been different, and the discussion would not have been proper. Mr. Hyde there. upon called for the third reading of the resolu. tion, to which Mr. Simms objected, and so the subject dropped. ‘Tbe Joint Committee appointed to examine the accounts of the lute Tax Collector, and to frame an ordinance defining the duties of the ‘Tax.
