The squibs about Mr. Seward’s pur- chases of icebergs, tornadoes. and earthquakes are inpumerable, Some of them are merely grotesquely Grolj, as im the case of “Mark Twain's” suppositious uncle who goes to St. Thomas in quest of bucolic quietness, and is first throwm om shore two or three counties inland, sbip and all, by a hurricane, in ‘erp Das Bis orickyard undermined by a vol- | capo, apd bis farm knocked on end by an earthquake; but for the most part the ridi- cule Bas more malice than fun, and is used in | Place of argument, to defeat the proposed | purchase. For the most part it is too trivial and pointless for re- production, but it was doubtless considered “mart attbetime. 4 similar opinion ‘will per- haps be given by the reader fifty years hence spon the newspaper satire now afloat upen territorial expansion. The federal Papers were especially merry upon Mr. Jefferson's moun- tain of saltin Louisiana, the theory having been broached that the Salt Springs emanated | from some mounrair of solid salt. The Fermont Mercury, under the head, + Won- | derful prospect of @ great bargain,” has two columns of satire and burlesque aimed at this Jefferson purchase, which was doubtless rel. ished immensely in thatday. The ridicule and depreciation | im regard to that purchase soon died out as the importance of the acquisition was 5 and so it will be in regard to Alaska and St. ‘Thomas. Already the New York Tribune, the leading opponent of the recent purchases, ad- mits through its Alaska ndence the surpassing value of that acquisition in view Of its fisheries alone. 1t is now found that the climate of this « ice-fleld” is really milder than ‘that of some of our northern States. Similar admissions in regard to the Danish Islands are finding their way into tue same class of papers, and it is now shown by the Bistory of St. Thomas that the -o much talked of burricanes only occur at intervals of about twenty-five years, the visitations at that Island baving occurred, according to the records, in 1713, 1735, 1742, 1778, 1783, 1619, 1837, ama 1967. Uncle Sam can stand a burricane there once maty-five years for the sake of holding a Position that commands the Isthmus and the Gulf, and that is a central point of oceanic travel for both continents.
