Tex M=TzonIc SHowzr Tr1s Mbryrsc—A BRILLIANT DisrLay—The meteoric shower which was predicted for this morning took place about two o'clock, and for a short time there was 8 very brilliant display, the meteors | falling so fast that they could not be counted. | At the U.S. Naval Observatory the full corps of astronom and Commodore B. F. Sands, the Superintendent, were on duty taking ob- servations of the course and size of the meteors, The greatest number radiated from the con- stellation Leo, which made its appearance above the eastern horizon between one and two o'clock, and sbortly thereafter the me- teors began to fall. Their course principally was to the North and East, but at four o'clock they were darting in every direction across the heavens. The number increased until 4.35 this morning. when they fell so fast that it was utterly impossible to count them. At that time they were shooting in every direction, and many of them were very Iarge, leavivg bril- lant trams of & greenish hue. At three o’clock this Merning the constellation Leo was about 60 degrees above the horizon, and at tha; time the grand display commenced. The con. Stellation was om our meridian at 4.35, the tim Of the finest dispiny. As will be seen by the official report of Commodore Sands, fully 2,000 tell from 4.14 fo 4.35 this morning. A few ra- diated from the constellations Canis Minor and Coma Beren: At the Observatory the corps will be on the watch sgain te-night, as it is possible that the display may be yet greater (han on lastnight. All observations are made with the naked eye by the astronomers: it being impossible to use the telescopes. A full chart of the course of the meteors, their magnitude, &c., will shortly be published by the Observatory: U_S. Naval Onservatory. Mr. Wilson was sent by the Treasury De- partment, in May last, to Brownsville with several others, &8 & mounted tospector, he having served in the Uniom army and been severely wounded in bactle, He was the first victim of the yellow fever in Browns ville, and incurred the fatal disease by exposure and exertion in the performance of his duty. Announcing his death tothe Commtssioner of Customs, the Collector, Mr. Robertson, who siso died nine days after, says: “His death was consequent upon exposure and endeavcrs on that night (the night of the tornado) to save Government property at the Custom House in thiscity. He had been on continueus duty _ for over 24 hours, and that evening, (Sth of | October,) was attacked with fever. 1 had learned the noble qualities of Mr. Wilson, and became attached to nim, and his death has very Muchafilicted me. He was a man of umdaunted courage and thorougaly hohest. He did bis duty nobly thronghout. You had a jst spprectation of his character; put 1 have seen it tested.” It may be some consolation to the ayed father, and sisters of Mr. Wilson, to learn that be had every possible care and attention during his short illness. Bap GUESSING.—Yesterday was rather a dry day for items, and some P&Srticular wild Guessing was made by such of the news chron.clers as were determined to keep up the sopply, bit or miss. The statement that Me. Clellan was coming post-baste by the Scotia to take the position of Secretary of War, ten. dered him, that the office might be filled be. fore the meeting of Congress, was particularly unfortunate in view of the known fact that McClellan has concluded not to return home | forthe present. The following statement ot the same kidney, we are authorized to state, has not a particle of foundation: ithim a few days past Hon. Hugh Mc- Culloch, Secretary of the Treasury, ‘tendered his resignation to President Johnson. Yester- terday the President adaressed the Secretary & note, requesting him to withdraw his letter Of resignation, and it is stated to-day that the request Bas been complied with.” IT IS UNDERSTOOD that Hon. W. E. Chandler positively withdraw from the Treasury Department next month, and it is given ont that he will be succeeded by the Hon. Edmund Cooper, Iate member of Congrese from Ten- nessee, and now of the Presidents’ household. Evervnopy in « Newspaper Row” is sneez- | ing to-day with influenzas caught in watch- | ig for the shooting stars. Dispatches were sent over last night from the New York pa- pers to their correspondents here to « look out for the meteoric display.” and a vigilaat “look out” was kept im cousequence. The Heral man got humself boosted up to a mot eligible but rather chilly position im the head-dress of the Genius of America on the dome of tha Capitol where he waited patiently for many hours and swept the heavens to see the shoot- ers shoot. The Timer and Trilnn- correspon- en's secured front seats on the bleuk tower of the Observatory. They had a hard time of | it, but managed to see a few stars.
