ea RS A SE NTT THE EVENING STAR. Base Ball Gessip. ‘The New York correspondent of the Episco- p has the following bit of gossip concern- ing ball matters. The writer says: Tt may interest some of the younger readers of the Episcopalian to know that not a few of. the merchants bave set their faces against ‘a, waste of time and other excesses, to whic’y tne rdent pursuit of physical exercise, -, im the seeps of base ball, has been gradually leading. A free conference on the subject was held the other evening, | the manston of ome of our mest Large a eae eee minted eiti- zens, an whole aubject was discuseed in ail its bearings. BOCONEDLY, he prevailing conviction appeared to be thst while base bail was an exeellent diver- sion, It would not do to make a business of it that while It was to beencouraged asa means of physical exercise, especially for clerks and other persons whose employments are of a vedentary character, there was a point to which it might be pushed toan injurious ex- cess: that that point has already been reached, And that, therefore, it was the duty of the em- ployers todo what could be done to impose ‘upon it a proper restraint. One wholesale dry goods dealer said his business had been a severe sufferer during :he past season, owing to the almost daily absence of the clerks at these games. Another said the rivalry between different clubs bad led to bet- ting on results, a species of gambling which he was not disposed to enconrage in persons ‘whom be employed to handle many thousands of dollars in the course of the day. A third party expressed the opinion thatthe health of the base ball monomantocs Was no better than that of many young men who never played a game in their lives Morally and physically, therefore, the con- clusion Was that this overdoing of what was & very good thing in itself, was an evil, and one that, if only for the sake of the young men themselves, it was the duty of employers to check. To that end,a committee was appoint. ed to prepare a pamphlet embodying briefly the views of the meeting. particularly among merchants’ clerks. The Young Men’s Chris- han Association, it may be added, intend to gtve the whole subject their consideration at an early day. Dist Mifictal reports state that nearly si) tons of meat have been condemned during the past six years in the London mar- ket, by the inspectors appointed for that par- pose. itis not supposed that any one would intentionally expose diseased meat for sale 10 our markets, but that inexperienced per: may possess the means of judging, we gi: few rnles condensed from a reporron the subs ect, whereby a judgment may be formed: “Good meat is neither ofa pale pinkish color nor ofa dark purple tint. The former indi- cates disease, the latter natural death or acute fever. Good meat is marked by email veins of fat, which is hard and suety, and never wet; while that of diseased meat is sott and watery, often like jelly or sodden parchment. Healthy meat feels fine and somewhat elastic, and ecarcely moistens the fingers, while diseased meat 1s soft and wet, often so much so that seram runs from it. Good meat haslittle odor and that not disagreeable, while diseased meat smells faint and cadayerous, und often emits the odor of medicine, especially when fresh cut, or minced, or treated with hot water. Good meat shrinks in cooking, bad shrivels or boils to pieces.” Dr. Livingston says that the flesh of slaughtered cattle while suf- fering with pleuro-pneumonia produces ma- lignant carbuncle in those who eat it. He cites statistics to prove that after the tmporta- tion of plevro pneumonia in cattle from Hol- land, the deaths from carbuncle increased more than six-fold, and the mortality from kindred diseases increased thirty fold. The ill effects of this Kind of meat cannot be destroyed by cooking A CoLorsD Woman's RIGHT OF Dowgr.
