THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the District. peeiEnesih eas borestor ithaca, W. D. WALLAOH, Editor and Prepricter. WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY. ++ OCTOBER 10, 1867. | S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- | GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. | THE CABINET. Already efforts to procure the displacement Of the present Cabinet of Mr. Jonnsomare being Tevived. To that end the Washington cor- respondent of the Boston Post charges Post- master Geners] Randall with desiring Mr. J. impeachment. The public may hourly look for the renewal of the In‘elligencer's dia'ribes Sgainst Mr. Seward, and those of the New York Herald against Secretary McCulloch. Though any appointments made in their stead can only hold office until the Senate may con- consider their nominations, Mr, Johnson will probably make them to gratify the Democratic party leaders who are demanding such action on his part. The Senate will confirm noone to apy such position whom the President will nominate under existing circumstances. The country may rest assured of this fact. Shortly after the removals are made, the positions will be held by acting secretaries for the balance of Mr. Johnson's presidential term, owing to the dead lock between Mr. J. and the Senate, which is certain to arise over these proposed Cabinet changes. GENERAL GREGORY, ‘The current effort to bring about the remova; of General Gregory, the head of the Freed- mens’ Bureau affairs in Maryland, isa very ill-advised one. No gentleman connected with the burean in any State has rendered more service to the public interest than General G., ‘who bas succeeded astonishingly in advancing his charge (the freed blacks of Maryland,) In every respect in whic all good and true men ofall parties unite in desiring te have them Advanced—in industry, intelligence, thrift, and Probity. A more satisfactorily improving peo- ple than are the colored population in Mary- land are to be found no where, thanks to the energy and devotion to his charge of General Gregory. Those who find fault with nis ad- ministration of his trust are men who would destroy the Union to-morrow, if they could: men who bate the negro because his enfran- chisement was literally the turning pointin saving the Union from destruction at the hanas of the atrocious conspirators who engineered the rebellion. FROM OH10. A dispateh received here this morning from Cincinnati announces that fifteen counties are yet to be heard from, about one-halt of which gave Republican majorities tast year. The dispatch also stated that if the Democratic gain in those counties equals that in the others already heard from, Thurman will be elected by from three to five thousand majority, ——_—___ PEESONAL.—Hon. lwin M.
