THE EVENING STAR. ‘Str e cissitudes im the Life of a British Nobleman’s Son. [From the Decatur (Il) Magnet, Sept. 2i) Most, tf not nearly all, of our citizens have noticed a dissipated vehicle, somewhat resem- bling @ circus Wagon, located ona vacant lot on North Main street, in which resided an old and poverty-stricken man. Some time in the spring the w&gon, propelled by a couple of at. tenuated horses, arrived in this city, and the old man pitched his tent in the place men- tioned, where, through the charity of theown- ers, he has since been permitted to dwell Here,he has lived ever since, eking out an e: retence by the donations of onr benevolent cit- izeps, he having disposed of the horses for 8 small sum Yesterday, F. S. Murphy, Esq., one of our Prominent’ lawyers, recetyed a call from & Scotch genueman named McGregor, who, after a long and weary search, had found the indi- ¥idval named we have thus described, and whom he identifirs as the youngest son of the Tate Earl of Clanricarde, one of the wealthiest and most influential noblemen in Scotiand. The story related by Mr. McGregor is al- Most marvelous in {ts details, and would far- nish the materials fora first-class three volume povel. Some forty years since, the poor old an Who has attracted the compassion of our citizens was a deshing and stylish officer in the Life Guards: becoming enamored of a beau- tiful girl of humble origin, he married her in opposition to the commands of his proud father and remonstrances of his equally proud elder brotber. Being disinherited and thrown upon the world, he sold his commission, and ‘with bis wifecame'othts country. After five years of vicissitudes upoa 2 rugged farm in ibe Western wilds, his wife died.and broken in spiritand sore in heart, he relinquished bis claim and ro-med without aim or purpose over the country. During the Mexican war he enlisted as a pri- vale soluier, and served uatil the close of hos- Ulities, Since then, he has been the companion of roving Indians, a deck band on steamboats, & peddier, &c , until hisarrival in this city. By the death of his elder brother, which oc- curred about four months since, he has become the possessor of estates to the value of £3,000 num. His good fortune alas! has come Prostrate in miad and enfeebled in body, be cannot realize, nor cn be long enjoy, the princely fortune to which he has fallen heir. Yesterday evening, iu care ot Mr. Mc- Gregor. he embarked on the evening train, on re tor his lordly mansion in Inverness, Scot- Jand. Fortune smiled too late. His early love sleeps by La Belle Riviere, and he lives & poor wreck of his former self—too imbecile to heed the frowns or smilesot fortune. Reader, is not truth far stranger than fiction! Events occur every day that outrival the wildest dreams of the poet Or romancist. Education of Youth. A London writer protests against the desire commonly prevailing among parents and deachers to push children forward in their studies without any regard to their health. Five or #ix years he asserts are not too much to teach a child to read, spell and write well. He adds ‘There is, indeed, among all classes a dispo- ition to cram, and any one attending the ex- amination of a village school cannot but feel tbe absurdity of the questions put. Subjects are jearned by rote, to be forgotten as soon as the examinations are over; and the manuer in Which the cnildren read shows how utterly amefficient the teaching has been. According to the system at present followed, it is im- pessible for an ordinary child to read decently; they have no time to learn. There is aciass. aud eacb child bas to read asentence: this is repeated in a nasal sing-song tone, withon apy inflection of voice or proper empb. when the book is passed to the last child, it comes back to the first, until the lesson is over. How can there be any interesc or emu- lation? even the sense must be lost. Children attend school from nine in the morning til twelve, and they return again at two, till four. These are too many hours tor rny child to be sitting stil], pouring over lessons; three hours a day is as much as a child can apply, allowing for interva!s; for it cannot be sup- posed that three Phours contiguous study an be good for any chrid under ten years old ifadifferent system were established, there cannot be a doubt that more real learning zoight be imparted, and n great deal of practi- cal information acquired besides. Suppose Yeading, writing, aud arithmetic were only taught to children up to ten years old, all the day need not be spent in these; and if arrange- ments were made to occupy the ch‘ldren in Succession Ia some active employment by which tbeir intellects might be sharpened and kept alive, there can be no doubt that a vast improvement would be apparent.
