‘SHE EVENING STAR, Natural History—Confusion ef Names. Rich as we are in various possessions, we are in nothing more opulent than in names for various familiar animals, such as fishes, Dirds, kc. 1t 18 with this as with material ‘wealth—we would often be better off if eur lot ‘Were cast 1 comparative poverty. Take, for x nce, our edible fishes. There is scarcely one kind that has the same name at any two prominent points on our coast.while each par- ticular appellation is made todo double and triple duty. So that, when a name is mentioned, the residence of the speaker or writer must be ascertained before the precise species of fish referred to can be understood. Instance a few examples. The rock-fish of the C! waters is the sir.ped-bass of more eastern localitics—the rock-fish of New England bein, totally different. The sea-bass of one place is the biack-baes of another, and the biack fish of still another; the last mentioned namej being elsewhere used for a kind of porpoise. The sun-fich of the interior fresh waters. a kind of perch, is very different from the sun-fish of the coasi, Which may be either a huge broad fien look ng a3 if the posterior half nad been cut away, or el.@ a ma.s of floating animated jelly. Tbe blu: -fish ot Atlantic City is called weak-fish in New York, shecutts on Long Island, squeteague in New England, and sea- trout or trout in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The blue-fikn of New York is the tailor of Philadelphia. the horse-mackerel of New Jereev, the white fish of the lower.Hudson, the akip-jack elsewhere. The king-fish ot New York is the hake or New Jersey—the whiting further South; while hake in New England ans a kind of cod. The tantaz of Massa- eBusetts is elsewhere calicd black-flsh and chub—the latter name again having @ different meaning in the interior. The same fish is called pike perch, pickerel and pike in the ‘West, and .almon in the Susquehanna river, without being in the lesst like the speci’: properly so named. The fishermen in Florida and Alabama will give glowing accounts of the capture of “trout” in the fresh warers of those States; but they are not the trout ef the Southern coast, nor yet the tront of our Penn- sylvania mountain streams, but of the same cbaracier as the black-bass of the West. The shad of Lake Champlain is not the shad of the edast, but the whitefish of the great lakes, ‘The herring of those lakes are not our herrin; but, like the whitefish, a member of the sal. mon family. The subject might be pursued indefinitely, but we have said enough to show that every name is applied to several different Species, and every species has many names. ‘With fishes, so with birds. The partridge of Pennsylvania is the quail ot New England and New York, and by no means the part. ridge of tae latter region, which is what we call the phcasant, an entire misnomer, in be- ing very different .rom the true pheisint of the Old World. It is :acis like these that vindic ite the pro- prieiy of the ecientific nam: 3 applied to thse and other objects of natural histery by theman of science. It is, of course, well in popular discourses to avoid @ pedantic reiteration of learned terms, but without the language of science to fall back upon 3 a foundation, in- teliigible t> all raiuralists, it would be totally imposvible to understand what is meant, in many cases. The condition of things becomes still more complicated when different coun- tries are taken int) account. Popular works of Natural History, wriien by the French, and even I” irned treatises, are usually quite unintelligible, from their use of vernacular names aud reglect to connect witn them, in some way, those derived from the Latin and Greek languages, and in current use by scien- Ufic men.— Philadelphia Ledger. How To PuT ovT Firgs.—A «Consulting Chemists” writes to a scientific paper that he bappened to be present some time ago at tha burning of an oil distillery. The place was as usual, drowned with water, which merely had the effect of spreading the flame, and m- creasing their intensity, for the oil burned un- til there sppeared to be notbing left tosupport the flames. 1 noticed the flaming vil floating on the surface of the water on the floors. The water running down the walls bore a flaming surtace of oil likewise. This shows that the ‘water had little or no power over the burning oil. There wos lying near the building in ‘which the fire broke out a large quantity of sand. Now, if half-a-dozen men, provided witb spades, had desbed a lot of sand upon the flames soon after the fire was discovered, it would have been putout and but little dam- age done. Some time ago 1 put out a fire which might have destroyed an immense amount of yal- usble property by simply dashing fifty or 4 hundred shovelfuls of siacked lime, which happened to be near at hand, upon the flames, which literally choked them out. The fire in this cace was cansed by a cask of oll being get on fire accidental.y This is only one of the many fires which I have seen put out by Adopting the came means. I consider it would be a good plan it owners of such places as oll ‘works, etc., always had at hand a quantity of sand, dry old lime waste, etc, which could be used in the manuer | have stated Mrstentous M A man named Jas. Darling, a lmen bleacher, residing at West New York, was murdered’ early on Sunday morning by some unknown man, and as yet the case 13 involved in mystery. It appears 4hat about 1 o’clock on Sunday morning Mr. Darling, who was sleeping in a front room on the second story with his two children, was awakened by an unusual noise in front of his house. He stepped out onthe plazza, when Mrs. D.. who occupied ® rear room on the second floor, heard bir ask some one on the outside what he wanted. At the same instant ™® pistol was fired, when she heard her hus- band fall, aud then there were four other shots fired in rapid succession. Mrs. D. gave an alarm, when several citizens who were getting out of a horse car came to her assistance, at which time Mr. Darling was lying insensible from & bulle: wonnd in the left side of his 2b- dcmen, the bali taking an upward course, causing death about 10 o’cloe in the morning. ~The supposition is that the murder was Prompied by motives of revenge, Bass 1x THE PoroMAC.—A company of four of our citizens visited Harper's Ferry one day Jast week for the purpose of testing the truth #t which we had heard much, whether or not there was rrelly ‘*bass’’ in the Potomac river. ‘Though as angler: none of them claimed to be disciples of that renowned old fisherman, Isaac Walton, yet properly accoutered, they cast therr nets, Or rather lines, immediately be- Jow the bridge at the conjunction of the Shen- andoab and Potomac, and their patience and perseverance were soon rewarded by a tring Of thirty as fine be-x, the real simon-pures, as ‘were ever drawn frem their native element. From the rapid increase of this fish, it is con- dently believed the Potomac will soon abound “with tiem in numbers £0 prolificas to compare ‘Wimes! with the herring shoals on tidewater, None hAve as yet been caught in the Shenan- doub.
