THE EVENING STAR. Particulars of the Merch: Unien Ex- press Robbery—A Singular Case. {From the New York Tribune, Sept. 24.] Lsteon Saturday night iaat the Montreal train on the Hudeon River Ratlroad lett Alba- ny for this city, Daving attaehed a car from Hiitnlo belonging tothe Merchants’ Union Express Compauy, which was in charge of FE. &. Gillette, one of the company’s messengers ‘When the train arrived at the Thirteenth street depot. on Sunday morning, one of the railroad employees knocked on the door of the car, but there wAs§no reeponse. ‘The car was soou af- ter taken to the office of the company, corner of Hudron and Leonard streets, when the doers was broken open with a bar. GiM>tte ‘Was not to be found, while a door on the o2 °T side of the car was oper. It was found tins over $21,(00 was ing. The key of the safe was in the lock, and attached to it was a note from Gillette, saying that all was right, and that he would appear at {1 o'clock on Monday morning and explain his conduct. He stated thatit was for the interest of the company that the robbery should be kept secret. The company immediately sent officers for Gil- Jette’s arrest. Atexactly 1! o'clock yesterday morning Mr. Miller, general manager for the company in this city, received a note from Gillette, requesting an interview at bis hotel on Broadway. Mr. Miller went to the pince designated, when Gillette admitted the rob- bery. He further said that for a long time whisky had been bis curse, and be was deter- wined to be rid of it. He saw only two ways by which to accomplish this—to spend a few years in Sing Sing prison, or to engage in bu: pees tor himself. He thought if he should d. e of the company's money they would offer a reward of a few thousand dollars for sis re- covery. He could by this means make a torced lonn, Which some time he would repay, and with thie money be would start his pust- ness. Should this fail, he would try Sing Sing. He particularly desired to engage in business, for be had for eight years been engaged to marry a young iady living in Buff'lo, and he thought the time for marriage had come. After talking a few minutes he concluded to reveal what he had done with the money, whether a reward was given himor not. He said when the train reeched this city he immediately went to Newark and hired a borse and buggy there, trom whence he went to Bellevae, where he buried the money. He offered to guide the agent to the place where the money was buried, and accordingly some ot the officers of the company accompanied him there. All the money was recovered. Gillette bas been in the employ of the Merchants’ Union Express Com- pany fince the Ist of January last, and has been a most eflicient and esteemed messenger. He is undoubtedly insane. All his accounts tor his lest trip from Buffalo were found, how- ever, to be made out accurately. He had two long pages cf entries, amounting to $21,710 02, and in all this be had not made a single Mistake. FLins—The naturalist recoguizes many bundreds of kinds of fiies in this country, but in our bousehola economy we reduce them mainly to three sorte: Houge flies, biting flies and bdiue-bottle or blow flies. The latter is readily distinguished: the two former are, bowever, frequently confounded, although easily Known apart by an acute obeerver. They may, bowever. always be identified ata glance by the position they assume on a wall. A common house fly almost invariably rests with its head downwards, and however it may alight, work its way around until this direc- tion is assumed. The biting flies. on the con- trary, as universally rest with the head poiut- ‘ug upwards, acting, in this respect, precisely like the mo-quito, equally blood thiraty with itself. This observation, which, we believe, has not been in print before, was first made by a Russian serf. The prother of an eminent ioreign entomologist, now residing in the United States. observed the man in question killipg some of the fies ona wallof his but, without disturbing others, and, on being ques- tioned, he gave se 8 reason that those with the heads up were “bitere,” and the otbers were not. A careful examination of the Jacts by (he entomologist himself, proved the accuracy ef the generalization thus made by an ignorant but observant peasant. GROWTH OF PorvLaTION.—The census re- turns of several of the Western States are ap- proacbing completion, and the results will foon be] Known. For’ lowa official retarns from all but four counties indicate a popula- tien of £95,194, an Increase of more than 145,000 in two years, or very nearly ten per cent. per annum. The Des Moines Register remarks tbat this is the largest gain, both absolute and proportionate. the State has yet known in the same period of time, except under the in- fluence of the great migration mania of 155% and I-55, in which period the increase was 2000 on & population of 318,000, or about thirty per cent. per annum.
