THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the Distriet. W. D. WAL! WASHINGTON CITY: | WEDNESDAY...SEPTEMBER 25, 1867. | CH, Editor and Proprietor. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. | SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. FOR THE ACCOMMODATION OF PBRSONs leay- ing the city during the summer months they can have the STAR mailed to their address, by ordering the same at the office, for 12% cents , per week, for one week or more. | NEWSPAPER CLAP-TRAP. Sometime ago a newspaper ws publishea here, the whole edition of which, according to popular belief, wes carried im the hat of its proprietor. He, however, was wont to assert, doth orally, and in the biggest Kind of job type, that b's circulation /mmenrsely overtopped thetofany other paper, and as he wes a gen- tleman of commrnding physical proportions, and carried a stick of commensurate size, his ascertions were Tecetvea by ‘he public with every ex‘ernal indication of cheersal belief. The Express seems (o have fallen heir to the job type, and bumptious style of acsertion of the “Toimes.” ts extremely modest headings to its advertising columns, ‘The Evening Ez- press having the largest circulation in the city is the best medium, &c, &0.” “High and low, rich and poor, read it,” (a la Dr. Darby's advertisements,) and a long string of the same style, remird us irresistably of the kindred pretentious announcements of the defanct ““Toimes.” Does the Ezpress really imagine that this sort of clap-trap has effect with a single intelligent resder? Thi periectly well thatit bas not a to the claim of having the “largest circulation in this city,” and yet it makes this puerile at- cempt to impose this belief on its readers. The Intelligencer, in the hands of its new proprietors, has launched out in the same bumptious style of self-glorification on an ipadequate base, and gets rather smartly rapped over the knuckles therefor, by a paper of its own political faith, the Baltimore Gazette, as follows “Messrs. Snow, Coyle & Co. are destined to achieve greatness. What famous act is to | immortalize the firm, and at what precise time their glory 1s to barst upon the world, are matters yet wrapped in the gloom of futur But they are cool hands—Messrs. Snow, Coyle & Co.—and are possessed of an smount of indomicable self-assertion which must inevitably land them in @ high niche in the temple of tame. As yet their names are not kuown in thst establishment, and per- haps are not very familiar to the mass of the people outside of it, and so it may be just as well to inform the public that they are the proprietors of the National Intelligencer, as & prospectus published in that journal daily an- noutces to i's readers. It is this prospectus which hes awakened us to a knowledge of the | peculiar charactor of the genius of the firm, which, 8s hts been said. 1s the valuable quai- sty of \elf-assertion. This the prospectus in question beautifully iMustrates. Itaunounces that (he National Intelligencer 18 “ now the only first-class journal of large circulation south | of New York.” As itis somewhat difflenit to | apply the standard by which public journals | are measured and assigned to the first, second or third. classes, Messre. Snow, Coyle & Co. can continue to make the same announcement until the end of time. But when they assert that “the sizo of the sheet on which the Intelligencer is, printed is superior to others,” and a piece of string shows that the duteliigencer i8 smaller than the Gasette, tt is evident that the firm, evem for the latitude of Washington, is coming it rather strong. But much must be conceded toa journal which, according 10 its own account, ‘publishes daily “really new readable matter” to an amount «“peariy double that of other papers,” and whose sub-cribers are people of “superior in- telligence” to other people. We have remarked thet we could not say in what line of lite Messrs. Snow, Coyie & Uo., will achieve dis- tnction. We incline to the belief, however, that they are to find their true cailing in the patent medicine businese.”” The Constitutional Union, which has really some claim to a large circulation, indulges so extensively in bunkum announcements, dou- ble-leaded, triple-leaded, and sprinkled with big caps, little caps, black-faee and italics (giving that sheet the look of a bad attack of measles) that the public does not give it credit for baying the circulation it can rightfully ciaim. ‘This clap-trap boasting and the system of employing advertising drammers are pieces of quackery alike discreditable to the newspa- per profession, and have long since been dis carded by all well-established papers. THE SUN AND STAR. ‘The Baltimore Sun, this morning, treats the Sax to an intensely blackguard and abusive notice, on account of its recent brief expo- sition of the true eharacter and tendency of the Maryland State militia. That the Sun re- sorts to vituperative abuse and low biack- guardism in this matter, will be sufficient Proof, to its habitual readers, that it can not meet the STAR’s points in any other way : for at never adopts that course when any other is possible, with the hope of success. That this Maryland militia is sImost wholly under rebels and rebel sympathizing influences is known toallin Maryland, as also the fact that the only Unionists who bave aught to do ‘with it are a few who do so in the hope ot thus being able to checkmate what they be- lieve to be its ulterior purpose. Viz: The or- ganization of & military force to be ready to resist with force of arms the Congressional measures of recorstruction, &c., in case Mr. Jobnson may eventually favor that policy on the part of its opponents. We do not believe there 1s @ handful of returned rebel soldiers in Maryland who have not joyfally joined this ‘State militia, nor do we believe that there is more than a handful of ex-Union soldiers in the or. ganization. except to the end indicated above. Notwithstanding the Sun's abominable biack- gusrdism upon this subject, the Srar contin- ues to regard this militia organization as trea- sonable in intent and dangerous to the public peace, aud as requiring prompt attention trom | Congress. The Star’s steady adherenceto the | Union cause throughout ard since the rebel- tion bas been in so marked contrast with the sinister labors of the Sun to make the rebellion & success, and, since its collapse, to restore the Gevernment—nationsl and state—into the bands of rebels and rebel sympathizers, as that ‘we are nardly surprised at the violence of the Sun's vituperation. The Staxexpecte Rowing © but manifestations of intense hatred from those | who, like the Sun, did what they dared do to aid in building up the proposed contederacy | apon the destruction of the Union. geuembeasbantaterhie eae THE SERENADE LAST NIGHT. The Washington Democrats serenaded Gen, Hancock last evening in the hope of drawing from bim some expression of a purpoze to set the intentof the reconsisuction laws at de- fiance in the administration of the aff:irs of the military distriet to the command of which he bas been assigned. The reader of the report of the affair will perceive that Gen. H. failed ‘o gratity them on that head: nor have we any | ides that his course in Louisiana will differ in | ary important particular from that of his col- Jeagues, one and all, in all the other Military districts. Mr. Johuson,in his briefepeech,dry- - hursed the Constitution, as uswalof late. He swings sround the circle” no more, bat re- ~ Misins se true as the needle to the pole to « the. Constitution,” as he understands it; to the reg- toration of the rebel leaders to all thew anti. rebellion rights, and to the re-establishment of ‘the ascendency in the Government of the dog. trines and views for which Jobn Slidell, Rob- ert Toombs, Howell Cobb and their associates contended so long and earnestly in Congress. iw pean Tux Orera.—Norma was very fairly ren. | dered at the National Theatre tas: ©vening, | notwithstanding the occasional short comings of the chorus, which for so besyy an opera is too weak. Mrs. Abbott sang well, but con. firmed the general opinion of her unfitness for the acting necessary to a lyric artist. Tne | partof Norma was excellently rendered by Miss Kichings. To-night we are to have “Martha,” with Miss Kiehings, Mrs. Seguin. Messrs. Castle and Campbell, all in the cast. ee ed DEPARTURE OF GENERAL SHERIDAN — General Sheridan accompanied by bis starr jeft the city this morning in the 19.15 train for Philadelphia, where great preparations are being made to welcome him. A telegram was this morning received at the War Department from New Orleans, announ- cing tbat the officers of the army there, who have been attacked wiih yellow fever, are doing well, and will soon recover. Map or THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO Ratt_ ROAD.—We are indebted to President Garret; for a very complete and elegant map of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, showing all its branches and immediate connections, ‘The road has now one thousand miles of completed track, and sixty-six miles (included in the Metropélitan Branch, the Washington County Branch, and the Winans’ Cat-off,) in progress of construction. The map is especially inter- esting for showing the line ef the new brauch- es from the Point ef Rocks to Washington, and Sandy Point te Hagerstown, and the connec- tions at Cumberland with the Connellsville Railroad, and at Harper’s Ferry with the Win- chester and Potomac Railroad, the extension of which will give to us the preferred route through Southwestern Virginia to East Ten- nessee, and thence with the whole interior South. By the completion of the Metropolitan Branch and of the Connellsville road, the dis- tance from Washington to Pittaburg will b> Teduced to three hundred miles, and from Bal- timore to Pittsburg to three hundred and twenty-seven mil YELLOW FEVER aT THE DRY TorTUGAs.— It is estimated that one-tenth of theentire num ber of pri.oners and soldiers at the Dry Tortu- gas bave died of the yellow fever, and the plague has now assumed a more malignant form. By the txlegram trom Key West we publish elsewhere in our paper, it will be seen that O"Laugblin, one of the assassination con- spirators convicied by the military commis- sion, has died at that place. ACTING REGISTER OF THE TREASURY—The President this morning appointed James A.
