‘THE EVENING STAR. gv For “AvOTIon Sacas’ shiyerticsmante eee fourth page of to-day’s Stax. ‘ LOCAL NEWS. MEETING OF THE UNIVERSAL FRANOHT AssoctATION— Woman's Rights —Last night, meeting of the Universal Franchise “Assoc: suon—an organization ‘having for its object o secure equal mghts to all Americaa cit- is right of. women. to m League Hall. There was in attendance between fifty and ty persons, the most of whom were females, ranging in age from tsweet'sixteen” to “sober sixty,” all white with the exception of two bright mulatto women. At balf-past seven o'clock p.m., the prea- ident i the association, Senator Pomeroy, not being present, on motion, Mrs. Josephine S. Griffing was called to the chair: Geo. T. Need- bam secretary. The appeal ++to the Friends of Equal Rights,” published in the STaR a few days since, set- ung forth the objects of the association, was then read. Following the reading of this document, Mrs. Griffing, the President, addressea the meeting, the particular theme of her remarks peng oe St ot wget and the piscing ber on fullequality with the oppasite sex. Until the women ‘were granted'thecs priv. deges, there could be no Republican Govern- ment, andthe fact that they were denied their Tights, was plain proof of the mismanagment of our political system. In no case was the in- competency of man to administer the affairs of Government more manifested than in the one fact that Jeff Davis, the chiet rebel, was now ermitted to roam at large, as & fine gentleman, ad Women been admitted toad equal hear. ing and influence in this matter, thecase would ave been different. Our ruler bi not the rerve to execute the laws as they should be, and no true philanthropist, who loved his country, should cease usvocating the cause ti! a proper state of things was brought about, ‘Woman was man’s equal in ever particular. and the two sexes should be completely om an lity, There was ne excuse for any one to stan. and make objection to woman’s young. Let her fill her sphere, and then she ‘would be more respected, and man would not look upon her as of the weaker sex. Justice must be awarded to every human being, and st was time to be looking about for the best means to secure to oppressed woman the rights she should be entitled to. Mrs. Julia A. Holmes was then called on, and spoke for about half an hour. She advo- cated equal rights in the most general sense, and quoted from Franklin, Madison, Jeffer- | con, and olers, to substantiate her argument ‘The objects of the organization were not to eppress man, but 10 elevate woman to her trae position. She should not be looked upon as the exhibitor of the frivolities of tashion, but man should respect her as an object of useful- ness. AS an evidence of their equality with men,she would refer to the facc that during the war over twenty thousand women had en- tered printing offices, and nambers of them bad filled creditably the positions of overseer and conducted successtally farming opera- tions. Auo'her evidence of their equality with men was the manner in whieh they nad filled Government clerkships. They had given emi- bent satisfaction, snd obtained an increase of psy. There was no reason why woman should receive a much 4s man for herservices. The Tight to vote and bold office should be demand- ed, for taxation withou: representation is ty- rapny. Mrs. McNall was next calledon. Shecame promptly forward and read a speech which the had written, Her sentiments were ultra cn the right of suffrage question, and she ad- vocated the equality of woman with man to the fullest extent A collection was then taken up,during which a piece of music was performed on the piano. At the ciose of the collection other speeches were made to the sume effect as the above by Mrs.Ed<on,Mrs. Sparks, Mr. Jolly, Mr. McRae, end Mr. Jomn H.Orane. Mrs, Sparks stated tnat she was opposed to woman’s rights up to the time sbe went to Kansas to keep boarding- house; but having been defrauded by a num- ber of her male boarders of what was her ju3t cues, she was soon made a convert to the doc- trie that defenceless woman should have the power of managing her own affairs. Mr. Crane said that it was only those who ‘were most ignorant and worthless among the men that opposed the equality of women— euch per: ons, for instance, as inhabited Mur. der Bay,” “Swampoodle,” and other delecta- dle precincts. Sach offscourings were blatant in their opposition to the elevation of the sex, while the mtelligent ana refined were willing to grant justice and equality to everybagy. ‘The meeting then adjourned. oe THE Hepson TayLoK PROPERTY.—The old English elm tree which stood in the yard oj the late residence ot Hudson Taylor, Esq> corner of 9th and Dstreets, has been cut down, and measured just two feet and nine inches across tbestump. Mr. Thomas M. Plowman, contractor of the new hall for the Young Men’s Christian Association, bas turned over the trunk of the tree toseveral of our old residents, among whom are Ma,or Thomas Donoho, Dr. 3. ©. Major Thomas Donoi0, who remembers well about this property, says the tree was not as old as the house it shaded. The first owner of the property was Thomas Law, Esq.,abrother of Lord Ellenborough, of England. Eamuaod Law, 8 young lawyer. and a son of the gen- tleman named above, next possessed it, and on the lot be erected a small law office. Alexan- e see, was the next proprietor, and then it passed into the hands of Dr. Geo. W. May, uncle to Dr. May. now practicing in this city. Dr. Geo. W. M and was the father of Miss Juliana Ma: celebrated vecalist. Dr. May built atwo-story brick dwelling on the lot, with a kitchen on the north side. This was torn down ig Sosy next possessor of the premises, Hndson Tay- lor, + &nd built against the east side of the dwelling. Since the workmen have commenced tearing down the dwelling and cutting down the trees many persons have called for the purpose of securing relics, and some rough specimens have been carried away. eas oe Equal Division Sons oF TEMPERANCE.— Last evening, Equal Division Sons of Temper- Snce had a fine meeting. at which several per- sops were initiated.
