THE MARYLAND MILITIA The /niciligencer attempts to break the force of the Chronicie’s exposition of the character | ef the militia tately fastened upon Mary- Jand by that State's pro-rebel Legislature and Governor Swann, by pooh-pooh-ing the whole thing. It fails to notice or answer any one of the grave poin's made by the Chronicle. The truth is, they are ali statements of undeniable facts, and are not to be answered: nor are thoy to be shirked, as the Intelligencer essays to shirk them. This Maryland State militia is officered almost entirely by men who served as officers in the rebel army, and is manned by Jate rebel soldiers or persons who sustained (im Maryiand) the rebel cause against the cause of the Union. They are being uniformed at the cost of the tax-payers of the State. Now, this is more of the sort of “Repub- licanism™ which, as Speaker Colfax writ Congress will be likely to squelch out next winter, as being irreconcilable with the repub- licaniem vindicated by the success of the Union's arms in the late wa: This militia will nct meet the approval of a single man who was heartily loyal during the rebellion. It is a public danger, as well as a deliberate insult to the whole country. At will be criminal on the part of Congress | to fail te guard the public interest against its eventual use as evidently intended. It finds favor only with those who, like some of the conductors of the infell rencery were barely Joyal enough during the war to keep them. selves out the Old Capitol, Fort McHenry, Fort Lafayetie, Fort Warren, aud other such Public institutions.
