Panis, August 27—Evening—The Emperor Napoleon, in @ speech yust made at Arras, significantly said: «Have faith in the future. Lonpor, August 27—Evening.—The Gov- ernment of Denmark has renewed its demand on Prassia in regard to the northern province of Schleswig. The Coal Trade. ‘The anthracite-coal tonnage was very much reduced iast week, by reason of the flooding of the mines in many places, and the injary sus- tained by the canals and railroads, in const quence of the rain freshet at the close of the previous week. Trade was, for several ays, almost entirely interrupted while repairs w being made. The Scbuykill region suffered Most, though almost all the canals leading to the several coal fields were more or less injured. ‘The tonnage by the Schuykill Canal for the ‘week was reduced fo 4,465 tons, and that by the Reading Railroad 519 tons—the ton- nage by both being but 23,97 tons. showing a decrease on corresponding week last year of about 100,000 tens. The Lehigh region, in its tonnage, shows 8 loss of 1,218 tons as com- pared with the corresponding week last year. The entire tonnage of anthrarite reported all the principal carrying companies for the week ‘was but 201,497 tons, against 321,004 tons in the same time last year The aggregate toanage this year is 7,450,203 tons against 7,779,940 tons othe same Ume last year—showing a loss of 326,647 tons. Tao trade continues very much depressed, not onig a5 evidenced by the les- sened tonn! bat by the very limited demand ata reduction of prices. The sales of 40,000 tons tons of Scranton coalat New York last ‘week show 8 small advance in steatiboat and grate coal, and a falling off in the price OF ege ‘And stove coal. The latter being almost en- tirely for domestic purposes are likely to be in better demand in the coming month, when housekeepers will commence putting in their winter's supply of fuel. It is ecrrcely possible for coal to be lower this year. It can be af- forded at present prices only by those colleries ‘which are most favorably located. Wages at the mines remain nearly steady, and, as Price of living keeps up, increased production of coal, without an advance of prices, im- Probable.— Philadelphia Ledger. A NEW AMUSEMENT—The New York cor- respondent of the Boston Journal has some- thing to eay of the change that has come upon Cheever’s church, and of the entertain- a, te be given there, before Mr. Tiffany lays Violent hands upon the building, and puts up in its stead @ splendid store. The correspon- dent eays: Strange enough, it bas been taken by reli- gious men, who have capital enough to try the experiment whether the Christian people of New Yerk really desire a first-clase place of amusement, free from all the ordinary objec- tious, or whether they do not. Among this nomber is Philip Philips, the Methodist singer, ‘who { yr fifteen years has been aiding religious Bud benevolent objects by his music, He 1s to have charge of thé musical part of the enter- tainment. Associated with him is Mr.Maynard, ope of the most energetic and devoted men in the Methodist Church in Brooklyn. A REMARKABLE AOCIDENT.—A most re- markable accident occurred recently to a French Canadian, who was employed in the saw millof David Smith, at Chester Center, Mase. Belng wearied with unusually long and severe labor, he sat down upon the track which he was atiending, and falling asleep, ‘Was in an instant wheeled up against the saw, which was running with tremendous speed. and bis arm was slipped off above the eibow like a twig and Groped in the pit below. Suf- Hicient strength was left him to call a fellow- ‘workman to his assistance, who, with won- ertul presence of mind, seized the end of the severed artery, mow spurting forth quarts of blood, and with a piece of linen thread which be had in his pocket firmly tied ft up, and thus topped the flow of bleod until a physician could be procured. HARD ON JULESBURG—It seems that a dis- pute about boundaries has arisen between jlorado and Nebraska, snd the town of Jules- burg being situated, so to speak, on the fence, is in danger of being left out in the cold while the quarrel goes on. In this extremity the mayor andcouncils of that town have had a luminous idea. They have resolved, tempo- rarily, to constitute themselves aseparate sov- ereignty. This declaration of independence, Dowever, 18 8 more novel step in seeming than in reality with the Julesburghers, since, if common report does not slander them, those worthy felk have been virtually their own sovereigns ail along, and the paper of both States assert that Julesburg is not wanted by eather. PrErreR—Pepper is an almost universal condiment. Black pepper irritates and in- flames the coating of the stomach Red pep- per does not; itexcites but does not irritate. Consequently it should be used instead of black pepper.
