THE EVENING STAR. Ravages of the Cholera in Italy, A ietter from ltaly to the London Times nye Toe cholera still lingers in Rome, and, though the cases are comparatively few, there i@ reason to believe (hat it iof the true Asiatic type. There can be no doubt, however, of its Baying broken out at Palestrina, Genezzano and Olevano with much violence in Tivoli and other places, nlso, it has made its a ance. The wonder is that, being in Rome, it did not atsume a more dangerous character during the time when there were such enor- mous crowds collected. From Sicily we re- efive most distressing news. The Syndic of Naples has received from the Syndic of Ri- posto, in the province of Messina, a telegram : “The doctors fearing an invasion of the chol- era have ali fled, and one is required at-any price whatever.” The Syndic of Rossauo, in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria, hy an- other telegram, asks for people to bury the dead. Ove medical man only was foand wil- ling to leave for Riposto, asiing as his salary one bundred francs a day,(a iarge sum in these southern latitudes.) bat he afterwards retuced to go from fear of being asenssinated, and as being deprived of the protection of the anthorities, a€ ‘nis, which may be said to be depop- ulated, the cholera rages, and five hundred persons a day are attacked. There, as ia otner Places, doctors and druggists have fled, not so Much from fear ot the disease as from fear of being murdered by sn ignoran: and brutalized population. who see poison in the veryreme- © ies adopted for their relief. Tne Prefect of T Fasciotti, has been among those Of the attempt of the Forza'l to es- ape | hove already spoken, and of the great ufficulty with which they were reduced b} ny of the Bersaglieri. At Caltagironi however, they succeeded in escaping, and three hundred of these brates now traverse the country, committing thetts and murders. Jp Catania another danger is, and was. men- Aced, as the poorer classes have shown a dis- iO Teyoltand sack the houses of the weal'by. Naples is still free from cholera, and this is the only bright spot in the melancholy pic- ture. Ginger. ‘The tendency of individuals affected by the extreme heat of the present time is toan ex- cessive indulgence in cold drinks without much reference to the quantity or quality of the fluid they imbibe So long as they can takea cold érink, a majority of the people care very ite what they drink, although physicians and ceusible people are aware that many pee- plesze annually killed by a too frequent or inyudicious use of cooling beverages during the heated term. For the benefit of our readers, ‘we recently applied to an eminert physician for an opinion on the subject and a prescrip- tion that would most readily meet the require- ments of thirtty people during the warm weather. The doctor's sudden and emphatic culation of “Ginger!” relieved us from the apprehension that he was about to enter upon a lengtby dicseriation on the subject of «death from an overdose of ice-water,” ending with a prescription combining a dozen or more drugs, to be taken as a substitute for the popular cool- ing draughts. “Ginger.” said the doctor, «1 eonsider the very best article, most easily pro- cured, and least expensive forall persons to employ. By ii: proper nee they may have cold ‘water in abrrdance, and atthe same time avoid most if not all the Ill effects produced by the cooling abominations a great many people pour down their throats this hot weather.” *Tell yeur readers,” continued the physician, “to buy 8 few ounces of powdered ginger, and every time they are thirsty jet them mix half & teaspoonful in cold water they desireto drink. If aspoontal of sugar or molasses is aided it will do no harm. ‘Extract of ginge! may also be employed by those who preter the article ina fluid form. ‘A bottle of the extract should be placed near the ice-pitcher or cooler and when people drink let them pour a tea spoonful of the extract in their tambler, before filling it with water.” “For my use,” said the doctor, «+I prefer the powdered article, becanse A believe it acts more beneficially. 1n the West Indies this root is considered one of the best preventives for the Summer eomplain’s of the tropics, when it is properly used, and is not abused. ¥. Sun. SHOCKING ACCIDENT—Horribie Death of a Woman.—On Thursday last, about noon, our quiet little viliage was startled by the an- nouncement that Mrs. Baker, widow of Dan’l Baker, deceaced, had met with a frightful death at the flour mill of Leighton, Clark & Oo., had been, in fact, literally beaten to death: that she hac beer caught upon a wheel that was revolving at the rate of seventy revolutions a minute, ard her body, striking the adjoining wood work, hed been trightfally mangled At the time of the accident noone was im the mill but Mr. Shnte, who was below, and on hearing a noise above, thought some portion of the machinery must have broke, he sprang @ the engine and stopped it; he then scended te the room above when a sickening ht met his view. The poor woman had been ca@nghton one of the shafts that connects the machinery and was terribly mangled and bruised, hardly a bone of her body but was broken. The skull was terribly crushed—the brains scattered about. She must have died instantaneously. Why she was in the mill or near the machinery no one knows. The fath- er-in-law of Mrs. Baker was killed in the same place and im the same way several year: which Jooks like a fatality in the family. Mrs. Baker leaves three small children, who are now orphans indeed.—Kenton (0.) Democrat. VaELocirEpes.—The tired swells of Paris have found a new sensation. They propel ve- locipedes in the Bois de Boulogne, by the cas- cade. Among the amateurs are some of the most eminent men in Paris—Prince Murat, Count Savern, and others. Some ot these ha become £0 skiliful as to go twenty-four kil metres (fifteen miles) an hour, without the Jeast fatigue. Some grand races during the Autumn are at present being organized, the course to be gone over extending from the Rond-point of the Champs Elysees to Saint Cloud. Several trials have been made, and the distance bas been done in thirteen minutes. In fact, some considerable bets were made on that occasion. These gentlemen are about wo form a velocipede club, to be devoted to the new sport. CononRnIxG Corrur.— Whether a daily mu- tinal hot bath be a good thing for the stomach im warm weavber is a question which may be left tothe decision ef those who are wise in the matter of stimulus and reaction, irritation and counter-irritstion. It has occurred to us, however, under the exciting intluenee of 1 glass of soda with coffee sirup, that a dietetic experiment in the substitution of coffee frozen for coffee at a boiling point might be made dur- ing the dog days. We suggest the addition of “coffee-ice” to the bill of fare of the average restaurant of our period. At present itis only Attaivable at first class confectionaries and Delmouico's, places where people of moderate desires and means least do congregate.—V. Y. Commercial. TREATMENT OF BLIsTERS.—It is 9 common error that st {s beneficial to break a blister in order to let out the water or blood which fills it. This water cr blood isa healing substance, of aking most appropriate for the parts where the sin is destroyed, and if the blister be al- Jowed to dry, new skin forms more rapidly un- der it, sud much pain is avoided. In excep- tional cases, when the blister is very full of Tiuid, so thatit causes much pain by tension, a small portion of the fluid may be given a cbance to escape, by the prick of a fine needie. A blister should also be cover up in some way *0 protect it from being rup*ured by accident, w7-The Columbus (Ohio) Journal refers to the great increase in the number of Ger: emigrants to this country since the ace by Prussia of so large a portion of Austrian territory as was acquired by tha: kingdom during the late war.
