SATION THE LATEST SE We devote a considerable portion of our space this afternoon to lay before our readers ‘@ synopsis of the highly sensational papers ac- companying the application to the President for pardon of Charles A. Dunham, alias San- ford Uonover, lately convicted of perjury in the Criminal Court of this District, and sen- tenced toexpiate his crimes in the peniten- Uary which application and papers have been furnished to the press for publication. The perusal of these extraordinary documents wil! suggest to an inteliigemt mind several queri which must be satisfactorily answered before any credence can be given to them. First. If the Hon. J. M. Ashley and his axsociates on the Impeachment Committee are gitted with ordi- nary imtelligence, and it is presumed tuey are, being members of the National Legislature, ‘Would they subject themselves to the risk of maautacturing testimony to impeach the Pre:- ident; an attempt certain to be detected in the thorongh and searching inyestigation which ‘Would attend the trial of the Chief Magistrate Second. Would they increase this risk ten-fold by applying to a convicted perjurer for aid. wheu there are no donbt hun- dreds of other men as unprincipled as Con- over, alias Dunham, at iarge, who would lend themselves to any scheme by which they could make money, and who, baying never been convicted, could exbibit a better record for truth and veracity! Third. Where are the | “trusty friends” of Conover to whom he re- fers, who would swear to anything, and who ‘were confronted with Messrs. Ashiey and But- | Ts and antece- dents, and where are their affidavits substan- tiating the statements of their perjured com- rade: Fourth. Why are these papers laid before the public at this time, thus putting the | alleged conspirators on their guard, instead of being furnisbed to detectives, as is usual in such cases, to work up the case against gen- e as conspiracy against the President ! When these | questions are answered satisfactorily, there sUll remain the proved facts that Conover is a | convicted perjurer and an adept in mana- facturing oral and written evidence, and is unscrupulous in the means he employs to at. tain hisends. In this case, knowing that the President was aware of his interviews with Mr. Ashley. he takes the readiest mode of tarn- ing the fact te bis own advantage in helping 10 obiain a pardon, by giving a version to those | interviews most likely to influence President Johnson in his favor. We therefore preter to | await further developments before we can be- dieve that members of the House of Represent- ative, engaged in © most important duty, have not only been guilty of plotting an atrocious rime, but have been so foolish as to take into of the natiot jer! Whatare their charac uemen charged with such a hemous cri their couneels a convicted perjurer.
