In the Winter of existed Nerrabouts rela: petrolenm at Lakeport, Samiiac County, some ten or twelve miles from Port Huron. The Tumor was started that oil was discovered in that locality and within a week hundreds of speculators from this city wereon the spot, and uearly all the iand within a radius of a ‘mile ‘was either purchased or bargained for & faba- jevs prices. The oil was alteged to have been discovered on the farm of aman named Horatio’ Graham, who kept it closely covered Bp all the time except when some cautious spéculator desired to see the genuine petroleum before in- vesting his money. In such cases, the pro- pri¢tor himself vitited the well with the spe- cniator, unlocked the cover, and with a bucket would draw ont several gallons of petroleum atthe sight of which the visitor usually be. came enthusiastic in contemplat! rf Me vast fortune to be made by an investmel ud an immense amount of land sold in the vicinity of Lakeport during the continuance of the “oll fever,” which lasted about two ‘weeks. ‘Thespeculators w ere principally from this city, and for a time almost every business mar bad some capita] invested in the Lakeport cil regions. Lund, however, met wi'h a signal decline, from winch it never recovered, although séveral perties were vigorousty engaged during the Spring in boring wells’ Some of the unfor- tunare speculators have recently ¢ome to the conclusion that the rumor of the well having been mysteriousiy supplied had some foanda- tiop, from the fact that the preprietor Horatio Graham, was arrested aday or two sincson charge of smuggling from Canada in the Win- ier or Spring of 1865, five barrels of petroleum, He was afraigned upon this charge before United States Commissioner Wilkins om Thurs- day, and pleaded guilty to smuggling two bar- rele, which plea was accepted, and he was bed for trial at the United States District Court ap September, in $250 bail. This fact only helped to cement the friendship so lately formed, and possibly the days of Auld Lang Syme were toasied by having something to drink.
