ee THE EVENING STAR, See ee Feeding am Oil. Well—Speculators Sold. {From the Detroit Tribune.) In the Winter of existed Nerrabouts rela: petrolenm at Lakeport, Samiiac County, some ten or twelve miles from Port Huron. The Tumor was started that oil was discovered in that locality and within a week hundreds of speculators from this city wereon the spot, and uearly all the iand within a radius of a ‘mile ‘was either purchased or bargained for & faba- jevs prices. The oil was alteged to have been discovered on the farm of aman named Horatio’ Graham, who kept it closely covered Bp all the time except when some cautious spéculator desired to see the genuine petroleum before in- vesting his money. In such cases, the pro- pri¢tor himself vitited the well with the spe- cniator, unlocked the cover, and with a bucket would draw ont several gallons of petroleum atthe sight of which the visitor usually be. came enthusiastic in contemplat! rf Me vast fortune to be made by an investmel ud an immense amount of land sold in the vicinity of Lakeport during the continuance of the “oll fever,” which lasted about two ‘weeks. ‘Thespeculators w ere principally from this city, and for a time almost every business mar bad some capita] invested in the Lakeport cil regions. Soon, however, the bubble burst, and it became about that the- well sbovenamed was doctored,” thongh this rn- mor was stontly and indignantly denied. Lund, however, met wi'h a signal decline, from winch it never recovered, although séveral perties were vigorousty engaged during the Spring in boring wells’ Some of the unfor- tunare speculators have recently ¢ome to the conclusion that the rumor of the well having been mysteriousiy supplied had some foanda- tiop, from the fact that the preprietor Horatio Graham, was arrested aday or two sincson charge of smuggling from Canada in the Win- ier or Spring of 1865, five barrels of petroleum, He was afraigned upon this charge before United States Commissioner Wilkins om Thurs- day, and pleaded guilty to smuggling two bar- rele, which plea was accepted, and he was bed for trial at the United States District Court ap September, in $250 bail. TuEy MzT By OFANCE TER Usual Way.— Afters stay of some years in the golden re- gions of California, Alexander Henderson ar- rived in this city some few days ago on his ‘way to his early home among the rugged hills of bennie Scotiand. He had even bought nis ticket for the yoyege, but as fate would Rave it be was destined not to leave the hospitable shores of America without an experience which may belp to warn him of the danger of chance acquaintances in future. By some manner or another he made the acquaintance of 4 nice young man, whose name at present 4s unknown, who introduced Alexander to anotber ‘gentleman,’ who is known as James Foster. After some littie time James discoy- ered, at leastso it is alleged, that he had m Alexander in San Francisco. This fact only helped to cement the friendship so lately formed, and possibly the days of Auld Lang Syme were toasied by having something to drink. Things went on this way until Foster, it ia sald, called ms friend Henderson aside and told him of the losses be had sustained: that be had been robbed of $800 in Chicago, and that as both were going in the same ship as far as Liverpool be would make so bold as Yo borrow the sum of $60, security for the Pay. ment of which he would leave in th the shape of @ valuable watch, a relic from a ‘ted re- Jative, which he dearly prized. oeviee such effect did the operator play on the sympathetic cords of Henderson’s purse atrings that they became uploored, and not 250, but $60, re- spended to the touch. While Mr. H. took Pos session of the splendid looking teh Mr. F. made himeelf scarce, aud not until on a more carefal examination did Henderson discover that the watch was of about as much account as the straw bail of Jeff. Davis. A visit to the station-house next followed, where he made Bis grievances known, and after a short period the quondam friend was found and brou Defore Justice Dodge. The legs and arms were perfect and of medinm size, and indeed, above the navel and below the hing, the bodies were perfectand well-formed.
